Ancestry DNA Explains it all !

Just to add another sobering note to the discussion: when test results give you a figure of, say, 5% Iberian, this means they've determined you have a 5% likelihood of having ancestors originating from that region. It doesn't mean that 5% of you is (or even may be) "Iberian". Given that 1 in 20...

    Coping with Post-Walk Depression

I came across this recent article on post-trail depression for thru-hikers. While it's about those coming off the long wilderness hikes like the Appalachian Trail, I could relate to it as someone who thru-walks pilgrimage routes...

    Shikoku 88 Temple walk

Hi GreatDane If you haven't already, it's worth reading Gideon Krauss' advice for the Shikoku walk from the perspective of a Camino walker. There's a full copy on this forum at this location: https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/threads/shikoku-88-temple-pilgrimage.11758/#post-79918 Also...

    Shikoku 88 Temple walk

I've been on this walk twice now. I found it a tough but rewarding and lovely experience. I hope to return to do it "gyaku mawari" (go around in reverse order), as quite a few veteran walkers on this route do.

A different Camino, the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage

PBS' new "Sacred Journeys" series on pilgrimages has a full episode on the Shikoku walk, with lots of extras on their website. The video is free to watch online, too. See: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/sacredjourneys/content/home/ For those who can't see it from PBS website due to restrictions, it's...

A different Camino, the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage

Lewis-Kraus has written a separate piece for those who've done the Camino Frances and who are thinking of doing the Shikoku Henro. A sobering read, to be sure, and most of the information still applies. There's a full copy on this forum at this location...

A different Camino, the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage

Thanks for bringing back the Shikoku memories, Kat. For others considering this walk... I've been to Shikoku twice to walk the 88 Temple henro (pilgrimage), adding the additional 20 "bekkaku" temples to extend the walk (and the inclines). I thoroughly recommend it to veteran Camino peregrinos...

    Shikoku 88 temple pilgrimage

Hi all Just a follow up to some of the info above: Shikoku isn't the southernmost island of the 4 large islands, as claimed. That would be Kyushu. But Shikoku is well to the southwest of the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, by some 700 kilometres. That said, Nagoya University researchers on...

Trondheim (Nidaros) to Santiago de Compostela

lovingkindness -- I just read through all your (current) travels in one go this evening. I'm awed by your strength and ambition! And I love your photos and commentary. You reported some cold nights in late summer when in Norway, and now getting into late autumn further down into northern...
