    Goretex shoes?

i think it depends on how much you sweat. everyone is different. I'm a heavy sweater and found my socks were soaked on my first camino while wearing shoes w goretex and yes I got a huge blister on the ball of one foot. On my next camino (also summer) I chose a non-goretex version of the same...

Are waterproof hiking shoes a good idea?

Hi Sundevil, I worried about Rain too on the camino and wore waterproof moab Merrells. For me, it was a mistake. The shoes did not breathe, causing much sweat and I did get a nasty nasty blister on the bottom of my foot which took me out of the walk for 2 days (though I enjoyed my break...

Your Ideal First Aid Kit for the Camino

Betadine, gauze and large square bandaids - originally I had all shapes but I did not use any other than the large square ones for the huge blister I got at the ball of my foot - they seemed to be the only ones that stayed on the foot. And cloth tape (vs paper) when I ran out of band aids. I...

Daily Musings from the Portuguese Coastal

wow I had not clue these trails existed. You're a fountain of information. Thank you again. Maybe I can start in Lagos and walk up to Lisbon and regroup... Do you think it matters in which direction one goes -- from South to North or viceversa? It looks amazing...

Key Essential Item(s) for Your Camino

I suggest you leave the coffee behind. It will give you the opportunity to stop in small towns after a few hours walk and sit for a wonderful cup of cafe con leche. And these locals rely on you!

Key Essential Item(s) for Your Camino

for my old arthritic hands - dishwashing gloves! I used them every day to wash my clothes in cold water (rarely did washing sinks have hot water)

    Woman Alone?

Hello! I hiked from LePuy to Moissac (about halfway) on my own in June 2017. I felt perfectly safe at all times. Even when I was out in the woods on my own. Sooner or later a hiker (more common than a pilgrim) will pass by. We got hit by a heat wave making the hike unpleasant at points. But the...

    $31 pack?

My experience has been that whatever SIZE of backpack I use I tend to fill it. So if you get a cheap 30L one, you can't overcarry since there's not much room which is a GREAT thing!

Taxi from alto de perdon to Puente la Reina

I did the Frances in 2015 so things were a little different then but back then there were LOTS of TAXI signs in every town and on the way (stapled to trees and posts) all through the walk. As you approach your destination, write these down (they will only drive so far) also ask BEFORE you leave...

    Camping-- Concern

I walked the gr-65 from le Puy in 2017, made it all the way to Moissac (was going to finish it in 2020) and my biggest regret was not taking a tent. In France yes, you can camp out in camping sites, plenty of them in GR-65. you can alternate with staying at hostels or b&b's though they are more...

    Spanish food at home?

I've made this tortilla espanola and it's really easy -- except when it's time to flip it. I've destroyed several trying that. But once you get the hang of it, it's a delicious main dish or side dish and will be very popular at potlucks. Try it! Bring a little bit of Spain into your home. Here's...

Fear of heights and the Way from Le Puy

I walked half way to Moissac and do not recall any scary parts - and I suffer from really bad vertigo. But I went in 2017 - I wonder if your friend took an alternate route? I stuck with GR65 the whole way. For me the scariest part was walking through a cow field (among the cows) and they were...
