Ok, basically I started the Camino then had to fly home as everything closed and I was worried my country would close its borders and I would be trapped on the other side of the world for months with no accommodation or income!
I did the Valcarlos route, stopped in Valcarlos for a latte, then...
Get an ING Direct account and use that card. I get 0.58€ per AUD at the ATMs and ING Direct reemburse the Owner ATM fee. Some hoops to jump through to get the commission-free FX rate and ATM fee reimbursement ($1000 into account and 5 debit card transactions in the calendar month before the trip).
I worked out that I have 30 days to do St Jean PdP to Finisterre. I will walk the Valcarlos Route to Roncesvalles on Day 1, but after that I have no idea what pace I need to keep to get to Finisterre 29 days later. Any sample itineraries or free apps that you recommend? No physical maps or books...
I need a fair bit of data I think, so I might get a SIM card in Barcelona Airport when I arrive. Any good deals for Spainish prepaid sims with data at the moment?
What time is the early train to Bayonne?
What time did you arrive in SJPP and start walking? How many hours is it from SJPP to Roncesvalles via the Valcarlos route? About 5-6 hours?
It varied between 7km and 20km per day, BUT it was at high altitude and a very steep ascent. Sometimes I would ascend 500m+ in one day.
My reason for doing the French way is for the physical challenge and the opportunity to walk through some scenery and nice countryside. I am not very...
Don't you recommend the Valcarlos route? Is the path before Pamplona not beautiful, apart from the Napoleon way?
I am planning to walk 30km+ per day. I am aiming to loosely follow this route I found somewhere on this forum:
San Sebastian Airport, Donostiako aireportua... not the actual town.
EDIT: Actually by the time I pay for all the the tickets, transfer, buy snacks etc to get to Bayonne, I might as well just go to Pamplona and book a taxi to St Jean PdP since the flight to San Sebastian is the same price as...
I only have about 30 days to do the French way and I want to go all the way to Finisterre.
I think flying from Barcelona to San Sebastian, then walking across to Hendaye and catching an evening bus to Bayonne is a good idea. What time is the first train from Bayonne to St Jean PdP?
