Poll Do you listen to anything while walking?

Sorry, but I would rather spend my time elsewhere now. I never said David couldn’t make his own choices, my objection was to the way he characterized people who made different choices. Again, this is not the first time I have encountered sweeping generalizations on this forum that denigrate the...

Poll Do you listen to anything while walking?

Am I not allowed to feel the way I want to feel about the way he said it? This is not the first time that I sense an attitude of “walk your own Camino as long as it’s exactly like I did it”. So I decided to make an annual donation to the forum today to thank Ivar for providing the information...

Poll Do you listen to anything while walking?

I guess we can agree to disagree that calling others “crazy” for doing things their own way is judgmental or unkind.

    Socks (i hate cold feet)

I know a lot of people think they’re weird, but I had 2 pairs of Injinji toe socks I alternated between (one in Nuwool, one in Coolmax), and alternated 2 pairs of Darn Tough medium cushioning merino hiking socks over them in my Altra Lone Peaks. I bought a pair of the Injinji years ago, and...

Poll Do you listen to anything while walking?

This is the sort of thing that usually makes me stop reading the forum for a while. It comes across as quite judgmental and doesn't account for the fact that we are all individuals with our own needs, and ignores “walk your own Camino”. I’m glad you found a way to experience the Camino that...

Poll Do you listen to anything while walking?

Thank you for saying this. Most days on my Camino there were no other pilgrims, and I had made a commitment to a language I had been learning daily for 16 months before the Camino. I managed to keep my 4x weekly online language lessons by stopping early on those days to find a cafe and wifi, and...

Poll Do you listen to anything while walking?

I’m also a little taken aback with the suggestions that “we” are all distracted daily or chained to a screen. Some of us retired/semi-retired folks have a ton of quiet time for contemplation in our real lives, and the implication that we aren’t doing it correctly when we listen to music or...

The Camino Isn’t A Pilgrimage Anymore

I’m very sad for those who are not familiar with the importance of the Craggy Island conclave :)

Coastal and Central Routes: Suggested Itinerary with Short Days to Start

I do! I did the Coastal/Litoral route this past late-Oct through mid-Nov. Especially early on, I averaged about the same, 12-15km per day, partly to give my body time to adjust and partly because I had an online language lesson every weekday in the afternoon. I did not use a baggage service, but...

Which is the flattest major Camino de Santiago route?

It’s the only one I’ve done, but I agree based on what Ive heard about the others. The first few days are on flat boardwalk by the ocean, so your body has a chance to adjust before you get to anything resembling a hill. Aside from Porto itself, which is pretty darn hilly :)

Choosing Between Astorga and Porto for My First Camino as a Gluten-Free Solo Traveller

I chose the Camino Portuguese Coastal/Litoral route for my first Camino Oct/Nov 2021. I’m like twice your age 😬 and liked that it was flat for the first few days so I could ease into it. I also love the sound of the ocean, and found it a great companion. I could look out to sea and watch the...

Which is better for a first-time Camino experience: Portugués or Frances?

I walked the Camino Portuguese Coastal/Senda Littoral for my first Camino this past Oct/Nov after watching Efrén's videos. I had a wonderful experience, and the fact that it's pretty flat at the beginning gives your body time to adjust to the walking before you ever see a hill (aside from...

Coastal Route from Oia to Santiago

I stayed in "Little Oia" (with the monastery) the first week of Nov this year, although I later dubbed them Good (Little) Oia and Bad Oia because I was treated pretty rudely in the latter, larger town, while I had one of my best days of socializing in the former. Casa Puertas was recommended by...

Quo Vadis, Dude? Any advice (alerts) for my Portugues Coastal from Porto itinerary?

I don’t know the prices you’ve seen for other places in Matosinhos, but I stayed at a studio apt at MyTrip Porto because I was using Chase points and it looked good. According to their Google Maps page, it’s about €45 per night, and it was excellent value at that price. Super clean and with a...

Quo Vadis, Dude? Any advice (alerts) for my Portugues Coastal from Porto itinerary?

Thank for saying that, but it’s quite oppressive how people get judged by where they stay. I walked with a woman who was so nice and fun, and it wasn’t until the third time we met up that we finally both admitted we were staying in hotels. We laughed about it, but the judgement is real. If...
