Lots of figures given above.......
Before I walked the Camino Frances in 2005 I read an an opinion that the cost of walking the Camino was about E1 per km, thus 1600 km (from Le Puy en Velay, France ) would be E1600. This was actually on the Camino, thus excluding getting to / from it...
Times have certainly changed since I completed the Camino Frances on 11 November, 2005. I walked into the office to collect my Latin certificate about midday, waited 5 minutes and was “processed”. QR codes, booking a place in a queue? No!
Maybe arriving in November helped as there were...
Hello Beverley,
From your 4 line message it is not clear where your camino will start. Will it be in France, say, or Spain? Wherever, you will need a fair bit of time and fitness.
Some planning of your route is no bad thing but reservations more then a day or ahead could be difficult as...
LesBrass, I walked the VdlP in 2012 and stayed in small hotels most of the time. Prices were cheap (say E25 or less), I had my own bathroom, no snorers and early bag packers, my departures usually before 8am and arrivals between 2 and 4pm. I never booked more than one day in advance...
My walking stick is called “Dumbledore”, bought on the Appalachian Trail in the US but not used there. So named because when I was doing walking training in England a child saw my stick and said the face carved on it looked like “Dumbledore”. I knew nothing about Harry Potter in those days...
So what do you think is a reasonable pace for walking the Camino? I'm hoping to reach Santiago from SJPDP in 36 days or less, including a stay at Orisson.
Here are some statistics about my walk which reveal a walking speed of 3.66 km in the hour (which includes stops / visits within the...
Re: Camino sanabres?
Toby,
Have a look at this site:
http://caminodesantiago.consumer.es/los ... /sanabres/
It is in Spanish and is good. Even if you do not read / speak Spanish you might glean useful info from it, eg the maps. Had I known about it before my walk in Sep 2012 I would have...
I recommend at least one pole or stick. Mine helps save me from overbalancing when walking on rough terrain, moving from stone to stone when the track becomes a stream (Galicia), providing help going up steeper hills and eases strain on the thighs / legs on steeper downhills.
I sent my stick...
The Waypost Secret
Having just finished the VdlP / Via Sanabres I can affirm that the shells do not always point the same way. The yellow arrows are the most reliable indication of the Camino.
In Galicia there is the most consistancy: the spikes of the shell point the way to go. However...
Statistics
Statistics can be what you make of them but here are a few regarding my walk from Sevilla to Santiago and, as you will know, one has plenty of time to do the calculations:
Distance walked: 993 km
Days walking: 42
Days from Sevilla to Santiago: 49 (includes extra...
Lodgings
Each person who walks decides where he wants to stay. I post here the list of places where I stayed, with prices, for any who may be interested. All prices are what I paid for a single individual for one night although, frequently, I was in a double room when in hostals / hotels...
Some afterwords
Having walked into Santiago, met my wife in the Plaza de Obradorio where all pilgrims meet and greet, taken a photograph or two, we slipped away into the local hostal which bills itself as the oldest hotel in the world, having been used by pilgrims from time immemorial. Its...
