I didn't wear a flag, but when someone asked, I would say I'm from Chicago -- everyone recognized the city. In one bar, it led to a hilarious conversation with a Spanish gent who told me how much he loved Chicago because of the jazzy jazzy music! How much he loved the black people because they...
I walked the Portugues in the fall, and wore low-rise, sturdy hiking shoes. The cobblestones and boardwalks would have been harder for me in running shoes, I think, but I'm no spring chicken :-) and I have some knee/hip issues. When it rained and there were some slippery/rocky inclines, or muddy...
I'd start in Valenca (I can't pass up a fort and the ghosts) to have the experience of crossing the international bridge, have time to walk around Tui (more ghosts, and not as serene), and have a couple of days in Santiago at the end. I was glad, at the end, that I had some time at the...
Hi Esther, sorry I just saw your note. Yes I walked the Portuguese Way last fall ... I was scared to tackle the Frances right off the bat :-) but I'm going to do it in 2017. I know EXACTLY what you mean!
I, also, am overweight and was very slow on the Camino. I never had anyone make fun of me directly, but there were a few times I felt judged. After returning home, I've had people express surprise that "someone like me" could really have walked all the way (Camino Portuguese). I did use a taxi...
I started out the same way. Took a taxi to Matosinhos from Porto. Beautiful walk into Vilo do Conde, I was at the Hotel Brazao which I did not care for (service was indifferent at best), but walked the next day into Esposende (so much sea history and legend) and then the day after to Viano de...
Would add this as well -- my trekking poles saved me from a couple of falls on wet, slippery, rocky downhills. If I'd just had a staff, I would've gone down. Of course I am clumsier than most :-).
I used the Verizon plan, and it was a little pricey, but on the Portuguese Way there were many, many nights when the wifi was unreliable or nonexistent, and I was glad I could get a message home without it. There were also a couple of times (in Portugal) when I was hopelessly lost, and glad I...
On the coast of Portugal, freshly caught and grilled scallops in the shell. Fishermen would sell them to me. Also in Portugal, the white port wine. In Spain, freshly picked grapes, fruits and collard greens (which they called cabbage). In Spain, grilled octopus and oysters. And more wine :-).
Hi Ana
I am 55, I started in Porto Sept 25, in Pontevedra tonight. Before I reached Tui, I saw a grand total of 4 other pilgrims lol. Since Tui, there's several people of all ages and nations on the Way.
I also am walking alone, but I never felt isolated, the route went through villages and...
Lol yes Jacobus that's how I have stayed on the Way since Porto, so that is good advice to continue. People are telling me there will be more pilgrims after Valenca, I've been lonely! :-)
Thank you that sounds like a better plan. From Ancora to Caminha today was very well marked. I was not looking forward to N13 just a few minutes on the road today was nerve-racking.
I left Porto on the 25th and it was cool and foggy, great walking weather. Yesterday leaving Viana do Costelo was the first really hot day. I overslept today and ended up walking in the noonday heat, but I stopped in Caminha for a beer :-) and am spending the night. Where are you?
