The Camino Salvado, a pilgrimage in the tradition
of the Camino de Santiago, is on again this spring.
We follow the path of the pioneering Benedictine
monk, Rosendo Salvado, who came to the Swan River
Colony in the 1840's. He was a refugee from Santiago
where anti-clerical forces had closed...
I can't resist adding the link to the
wonderful blog, Where's Mum Now,
which has been entertaining me for
months. It turns out the writer is one of
our fellow pilgrims. She seems to be
working her way through the West
Australian edition of the Lonely Planet.
I loved her discovery of New...
You''ve certainly started something, Sandra.
I've had many responses and have
email addresses for those who want to
be notified of future meetings. There's
such a lot of enthusiasm out there, we
should have done this years ago.
This year, I was privileged to meet Sister
Margaret of the Good Samaritans, a teacher
at Notre Dame University. Her main field
of research is the Benedictine tradition.
She is truly quietly inspiring.
Here's the link to her piece on her Camino.

Thanks for doing this. It's a great idea, and it
sounds like fun. I'm looking forward to it.
These chats are one way of
overcoming the tyranny of distance when
Sandgropers feel a little apart from the rest
of the world.
I'll email my contacts with the details.
Hello fsam33
The desire to explore, experience and absorb
a sense of a place is a wonderful thing, but...
No one who has done the 7 days of the Camino
Salvado would recommend walking it solo.
You simply cannot carry enough water.
Please do not try, not even at home -
you will hurt yourself...
We all know that every camino experience is
different and depends on many things. The
journey is your own. Doug, I know that your
care made a huge difference to the people
who travelled with you. Your knowledge will
continue to help Australian pilgrims.
(I'm writing an introductory...
In Saturday's West Australian Travel Guide,
3/9/11, Pam Casellas, revisits her journey
on the Camino Salvado. The accompanying
photos are outstanding, if you can get the
paper itself. She walked through the canola
fields in full flower.
She really does give voice to my inner
thoughts:
"I...
No worries at all, Carole. If you've been
wondering, then others must have wondered
too.
It's a shame Western Australia doesn't have a
Camino group, as do the other states, to
answer questions and pass on information,
but I live in hope.
We'll be setting dates for the 2012 walks in the
next...
The Camino Salvado is as yet still best travelled
as an organized walk; unlike Santiago food, water
and shelter are not conveniently located. In
Salvado's time, he and the Yuat people had to be
very, very cautious about travelling beyond their
known water sources. Without outside support
you'd...

In Thursday's West Australian, 23/06/11, Chris Olney
tells of her Camino Salvado experience last year.
She may be a serial pilgrim, as she mentions the
Camino Santiago.
Loved the photo.
Dom Rosendo Salvado was a pioneer monk
from Santiago who left Spain after the
dissolution of the monasteries, sailed to
the Swan River Colony (WA) and founded
the monastery town of New Norcia. His
journey was astonishing and his story is
inspirational.
Compass (ABC1) covered the Camino Salvado...
Hi anniesantiago
The Camino Salvado was first
completed in 2009 and was seven days/
six nights. We've moved our route
closer to the original route of the
Yuat people and Dom Salvado as we've
been given permission by landholders.
And we've also discovered a lost road
through Julimar Forest...
Accomodation is varied. In Guildford (Swan Valley)
we've booked Swan Leigh with shared rooms. It's
brand new (rebuilt after severe storm) on an
historic site. In Chittering Valley, we have a gorgeous
house on a hill which does convention type groups.
Again, shared rooms. In Bindoon, we're...
