So tell me what's wrong with this phone idea

My T-Mobile (USA) plan allows free international roaming, including data. I did find that finding data was pretty iffy along the Le Puy route last June, though. Sometimes I would have it though one of the French carriers, then a few hours later I wouldn't have any data in the same location. But...

Taking Humira on the Camino Frances. Is it doable?

You might also want to ask your your doctor about alternatives. Explain what you're going to be doing and see what he says. If he know the situation, he may be able to find a way to make it possible. Either an alternate medication, or a way to handle the Humira while travelling that none of us...

    Variants of sunglasses

I strongly prefer polarized sunglasses for driving because it cuts the glare from wet roads or reflections off of the rear windows of cars. But for hiking I don't see it as that much better. And it has the downside of not being usable if I turn my phone to landscape mode, since my phone's screen...

Top of new shoe rubbing ankle

If you wear them for a few weeks and things don't get better, it'll be too late to return them. Send 'em back and gets something that fits you, rather than hoping that you'll adapt to fit them.

The Top Ten Things I've Learned from this Forum

As General Eisenhower said "Plans are worthless, but planning is essential." That combines nicely with Von Clausewitz's rule "No plan of battle survives first contact with the enemy." Last year, I spent hours creating a spreadsheet with all of the places we could stay with a donkey between Le...

Entering France with a "Deported" stamp in my passport

The real question is: Whose computer is it on? If he got red stamped in the USA, will French border control know? Will they care that you got deported from the USA?

Rubber galoshes for walking in the mud on the Camino

Yeesh, that looks miserable to walk in. Looks like it would suck galoshes right off of your shoes/boots.

    Smashed toe

My wife broke her toe in December and could hardly walk for a couple of weeks. Then she slipped on a wet floor a few weeks ago and it hit a cabinet and we think she broke it again. We're planning on walking in continuing our pilgrimage in June, and she's still at the point where if she goes out...

    Just back....lessons learned

One thing you can do with your poles is bang them together. Aluminum poles in particular make a metallic twang sound that often will make a dog uncertain enough that it will stay back.

    Favorite Luxury Item on Camino?

I've left a number of swiss army knives at security checkpoints over the years because I forgot to put them in my checked bag. But I don't consider mine a luxury, it's a necessity.

    This could come in handy!

I was actually joking when I asked about it being allowed on planes. But I just checked the tsa.gov page listing prohibited items. For knives it says they are prohibited from carry-on "Except for plastic or round bladed butter knives.". For scissors it says "Metal with pointed tips and a blade...

Rubber galoshes for walking in the mud on the Camino

Another option for stream crossing is to just take your shoes/boots/socks off and wear your sandals that you carry for after walking or showering. Then dry your feet off on the far side and put your dry socks and shoes/boots back on and continue onward. gets a bit brisk in mountain streams that...

How much storage for your DSLR/mobile?

As for how much space you need, that depends heavily on how many pictures you take. Some people hardly take any pictures, some stop at every bend in the trail and every flower. Only you can know how many picture you'll take per day. Also, the resolution you use makes a big difference. If you...

How much storage for your DSLR/mobile?

Many places have wifi, so as long as you have a device that can read the card and access the internet, you can upload pictures along the way to make room for more. This is trivial if you're using a smartphone as your camera. Many of the latest smartphones/tablets have USB OTG (on the go)...
