Shakedown request: February on the Camino Frances, 35 pounds current weight

Reduce the clothes to half. We only carry one set. One on, one off. Post everything for the after holiday to Ivar. I carry around 8kgs total.

Where was your most memorable stay and why?

The lessons of the camino are hard won.

    The Camino needs pilgrims.

I wonder if there are more guided tours which bring a lot of walkers. These tours do not support the albergues but more 'salubrious' accommodation. People tell me they are 'doing' the camino. They mean they are being facilitated through a nice walk each day. Most do not even realise the...

Way too overwhelming to book beds/rooms (mid july - mid August, frances)

Very sensible suggestion. Letting go of your fears and trusting is a big part of the camino experience.

    Jitters

It is not awful to use other transport. I thought about it this way.... if an early Pilgrim was offered a donkey ride, do you think they would have said "No thanks. I am a pilgrim" ?? 😃

How hard is the Via de la Plata?

We walked from Salamanca to Benavente, bus to Orense and then walked to Santiago. About 250 km. You see the best of the flatlands with beautiful towns and then enjoy the cool green of the hills. This was in early September 2014. Easily achievable for many levels of fitness.

    Cea to Laxe bypassing Oseira

We walked from Orense to Cea in one day, took a taxi to visit the monastery in the afternoon and then walked to Castro Dozon the second day. Beautiful area and worth spending 2 days. Private hostel in Cea was magnificent and well worth the extra dollars.

    Ourense hospitaleros?

We were in Ourense in September this year. He was very rude and we ended up staying in a hotel. Such a shame as we had looked forward to such a lovely old hostel to stay in. It really does take the shine off a day when you meet some-one like that.

Should I Give My 2nd Pair of Boots "The Boot?"

You are insane if you are carrying more than 8kg. 5-6kg is doable. We like many, many others posted gear ahead after a couple of days. Save yourself the trouble and cut back, cut back, cut back

How many days to walk the Via de la Plata?

Hi Mel We are leaving Salamanca on 13th September and are not expecting to be very fast so may see you on the track. We are Australian and have the fly veils that are easily available here at army disposal shops. For others - we do not dispose of our armies - just their gear. First time for us...
