Ulysse:
Your info is exactly what I had been hoping to find. So interesting, and full of detail. Poor me, I wish I had known this before I went. This really adds yet another dimension to the Camino.
Many thanks,
K.
On several stretches of the Camino Frances one walks on an original roman road, most of it perfectly preserved and functional.
Looks like that formed the early 'backbone' of the Camino for a long time through the history.
Which roman 'Via' was that, by name, and where to find more...
I of course too agree fully with Trudy and Liv, thank you both very much for acknowledging and further emphasising the problem, cleanliness certainly begins with us pilgrims first, and there cannot be any excuse for littering anywhere anytime, and least of all impossible places on the Camino...
Exactly. I actually enquired at San Zoilo Hotel why they have such a huge parking lot and they told me their main business is organising big wedding parties for the greater region,
so with the bedbug infestation in this hotel this plague can spread much further overland and to far away places...
Peter:>>is that San Zoilo? <<
Yeah. We thought we were safe there, 3 stars.
I think it is important we speak up about the problems on the Camino today, the trash, the hygiene. I believe by doing so we help those inside the country who work hard to improve things, give them backing through...
Camino revisited
True, but only partly.
The other truth is that there are many litterbins along the Camino that are never emptied, they spill their contents all over the place.
This time of the year, with the vegetation somewhat receded, the sight is absolutely revolting, trash left, right...
Chinches in a three-star hotel
Sorry to report we met them again last week - in a three-star hotel outside Carrion de los Condes. Some of them we found in time sitting in the curtain folds. Others struck.
They were big - I suspect they were not 'Cimex lectularius' but 'C. hemipterus'.
They...
JustRob:
I quite value your interest in and commitment to re-enacting historical situations.
But, with special regards to the Camino, I believe you are going astray.
The Camino Santiago, unlike the comparatively short American Civil War, was for over a thousand years yet and still IS...
Be happy, Behappy! :D
At least, and most importantly, you'll be in numerable and -as usual- good company.
Last year, on October 2, still some 60 had started out from SJPdP, some more joined from Roncevalles onwards, and so on. The numbers go down in October, but they never drop off sharply...
Bharat:
A good test run of about 120km would be from Logrono to Burgos. Logrono is easily accessible by public bus from Bilbao International airport, and there are several daily buses back to Bilbao from Burgos.
It is a very scenic and not too demanding walk, mostly through the mellow hills...
William, Wulf:
I think you overlooked that they have titled their posting 'Motorbiking the Trail', (Not: 'Motorbiking to Santiago') meaning to me they were actually thinking of taking their motorbikes onto the Camino itself and not onto the roads nearby. :x
This thing deserves a strong...
Absolutely none. That is beyond where I draw the line.: Motorbikes howling through the Meseta? Enduros going over the stone-men pass? Do us a favour - stay away! :x

GoreTex is dangerous
I feel reminded of Richard Reid, the british 'Shoe Bomber', who had tried to set fire to (the SemTex in) his shoes, and had failed.
Seems like anyone wearing GoreTex shoes boarding a plane needs to be looked at very closely. I suppose they better ban GoreTex altogether...
I think it's very funny.
I think it's very funny.-Involuntarily, though.
Life and pilgrimage will go on, unperturbed. Will someone in a thousand years from now remember the 'sore feet logo' of 2010? -I doubt it, very much. So, why bother much? I think it's beneath contempt. Time will do away...
Good question, but I suppose '42' is the only possible and therefore correct answer! :D
To start with, out of SJPdP in early September, you will te too early for the awesome Indian Summer foliage colours of the broadleaves, which comes on in October in the Pyrenees. (But you may see some of...
