Pictures from our Camino Frances (August-September 2007)

I can't believe the fantastic weather you had in Galicia. We went (biked) in June and were wet for the whole week from Astorga to Santiago. It actually made me rather unhappy. If the weather had been fair, it would have been so much more enjoyable on the bike. Anyways, I haven't been here in...

    Leon or Astorga?

Orbigo I have to say that if I had the choice, I would start in Hospital de Orbigo... It's about 10 km from Astorga and is a lovely town with some of the most beautiful albergues we met on the way. And from there to Astorga it goes through lovely red landscape, no longer along the road.

    Leon or Astorga?

Astorga I would start in Astorga. True, between Leon and Astorga it is flat, but it is also the least attractive part of the Camino. I would not hesitate to skip it and enjoy the what lies after Astorga.

Favorite Foods on the Camino Frances

food Sure. We didn't really expect to wine and dine en route. It was a general observation for Spain in general, because we spent 5 days travelling back along the camino and then down to Tarragona (by car) and it didn't get any better, regardless of whether the meal cost 10 EUR or 30 EUR...

Favorite Foods on the Camino Frances

Food Yeah, but I'm a gourmet. I love cooking and tasting and savouring new flavours and tastes. So for me it was good fuel, but I was hoping for a better culinary experience.

Favorite Foods on the Camino Frances

food And the best thing we had, in my opinion, was an empanada with meat from a small bakery in Sarria. It was INCREDIBLE! When we were driving back from Santiago, we stopped there again and bought another one, this time with tuna. I liked the meat one better, but both were really fantastic...

Favorite Foods on the Camino Frances

food I have to admit that I was not too impressed with meals at restaurants (menu del dia or menu de peregrino). Some were certainly better than others, but all of them had a tendency to be horrifically greasy. And french fries are NOT my favourite side order, in fact I never make them at home...

Back from biking the Camino Frances

Photos I am finally working on posting the photos on the Internet. I'm not sure how to make them publicly accessible yet, but when I do I will provide a link, if anybody is interested. The captions are in Czech, but the names are generally indicated, and those who've been there will know...

    cycling - which route

:-) Yes. Hospital de Orbiga is lovely and the 10 km to Astorga after that were really beautiful.

    cycling - which route

biking We just cycled from Roncesvalles to Santiago. It really depends on whether you are planning to take the road or the camino. I am a detractor of the Leon - Astorga section. It's all along the road with a steady headwind, and really not a nice way to start. I would start in Astorga...

Back from biking the Camino Frances

OK OK. I've recouperated, and as mentioned in a different post, I am now suffering from the post-Camino blues. I feel like doing nothing. I don't even feel like rewriting the journal I kept on our travels, although it is certainly worthwhile to do so and I will get it done by the end of this...

    Post Camino Blues?

:-( Tell me about it! I've been back for a week now. At first, I didn't really feel it because I was flooded by work during the first 4 days after returning, and didn't really have time to think about it. But it set in over the weekend and now it's awful. I miss the Camino so much! We've been...

    In defense of early risers

early birds Janet, what you describe as your habit, however, is a very respectful and nice way of treating others who do not get up so early. From our experience, many people had no problem ringing an alarm at 5:30 a.m., jumping out of bed, switching on the lights in the entire dorm and...

What part of Camino would you not do?

Note Note: We biked the walkers' camino the whole way (except the hill down from Cruz de Ferro).
