The joke is on me. I decided to walk on (40km) cancelled my reservation and got to Burgos. I arrived at the donativo at 5pm and they had 3 beds taken out of 12. 😆 there is no bed race!

I agree. We are all used to having Spain be such a reasonably priced country in general compared to many others, that it can breed an expectation that everything from lodging to meals should all be a bargain, which is wrong to assume.

I think if it is really hot, you should stop earlier in the day. If you are not booking, you will have the flexibility and you don't have to go all the way to Los Arcos .. You might ask if anyone (another pilgrim) wants to go the alternate route...
