    Buy or rent a bike

Forgot to say re the its feels like cheating, that was my attitude when I did it. However on reflection its and attitude that brought me a lot of grief, no one else cares where you start of whether you take the road or the trails. Do what you can and enjoy the ride, no need to punish yourself.

    Buy or rent a bike

Not sure about the price to rent, but, when you take into account the short time you plan (15days), the need for pannier, and the problems of buying getting the bike to your starting point then for the extra money if it is extra it would be worth it. Lots of places to compare just google bike...

    Buy or rent a bike

Agree with Evanlow better to buy in Pamploma given your time constraints. Bought mine in Bayonne and rode to SJPP (tough first day). You can get a bike at Decathalon for 199 Euro at least that was the price last year. But its has gearing that will make it hard work up the many hills. You can...

    Walkers/Bikers

Don't disagree with the notion that there are lots of other options for bikers than doing the Camino (one could argue the same for the walkers of course if you wanted to, I don't). In defense of myself and I felt at all times I needed to do that (defend the fact that I was biking) when I...

    Walkers/Bikers

Just finished the Camino after biking from Bayonne to SDC via SJPP and then on to Fistera and Muxia. Had not intended to bike it but circumstances meant that is was do it that way or not do it at all. Had been reading this forum for a while (thanks for all the great info) and as I came to the...

Issues with taking Cycle Helmet as Carry-on Luggage

On the way home put my helmet in my back pack (sea to summit highly recommended, packs up into something as someone else said about the size of a tennis bag). Never had a problem through numerous security checks. Took all my stuff in a IKEA blue zip Frakta bag (panniers helmet etc)...

    50km per day reasonable?

Agree with newfydog 25 to 100 k the norm. Easy to do 100k on the no push days on the Meseta if you want. But on the tougher stages where you are on the trail with rugged terrain then you might be down to around 30k, for example SJPP to Roncevalles going on the Napolean route thats a hard flog...

Cycling various Caminos-Good, Better, and Best

Just finished biking the Camino started in Bayonne finished in Muxia so adding a few comments to add to Newfy Dogs excellent post. Comments interspersed with his text in quotation marks. "If you have time dont miss going to Fistera and Muxia, both stunning towns on the coast, of course like...

Shuttles or buses that take cyclists and their bikes

Re bikes on Buses. Did not transport my bike on the bus while doing the Camino, but after reaching SDC went on to Fistera and then Muxia and took the bus back to SDC ( seems to be par for the course at that point I think everybody is ready for the bus!). Was concerned about being able to put...

Biking La faba and O Cebreiro

Think the jury is out. Stick to the road if you are on a bike. If you are looking for a work out even on the road you are going to get one. Make sure you take note of the signs that keep you on the road, unlike some I know including myself.

    Bike Biarritz to SJPP

Nobody answered my ? Just back so for anyone thinking about doing it. If you take the back roads there are some hellish climbs at one point bike ended up with the front wheel leaving the ground and me falling off it was so steep. If I was to do it again I would stick to the main road except...

O Cebreiro by bike, how tough is it....?

Re the drop down to Uterga from Alto Perdon. Was advised by some Spanish bikers to take the road. Said screw that and went down the track. A lot of fun got off the bike a couple of times to negotiate some steps(did not want to go over the top at that early stage saved it for later (lol), but...

O Cebreiro by bike, how tough is it....?

Just back from biking the Camino Frances. To answer the original ? How tough is it. Well even if you stick to the road its a very steep climb and you will have your work cut out. But satisfying when you get to the top. I took the road at the point Newfy Dog advises but I think it was before...

    Buy or rent a bike

To answer the original ? Buy or rent. Depends really how long you intend to spend on the Camino. The Camino Frances can easily be done in 3 weeks on a bike. So if you want to just do this cheaper to rent. If you want to spend a longer time then it might be better to buy. Heres my...

    gear for cycling vs walking?

Just finished biking from Bayonne to Santiago and then on to Muxia and Finistera. Here are some suggestions: 1. Clip in pedals if you are experienced and even if you are not since if you are doing the full show you will be by the time you finish! Take some with you, Shimano make a version...
