Two weeks ago I took an Uber from Chamartin to an airport hotel near terminal 1 and it cost less than 18 euros. I thought it would be a lot more. I had planned on taking the metro but I arrived in Madrid later than expected.
Nope, it's the only solution. Unfortunately, I don't have the money or EU passport to spend more time than I do on the Camino.

Are we talking about the super long ones that basically span the width of a queen size or double bed? I am often alone in those beds so I like them too... but I always wonder how couples deal with having one super long pillow rather than each...
Seems you were right about "even higher" - the counter seems to have stopped at 4,023 today. An extraordinary number. 7,918 Compostelas issued in just two days. That's 3,000 more than in the entire year of my first Camino. Gobsmacked!
I have stayed at Hostal Viky and will be going there again in a few weeks. It's considerably more expensive, but has a free airport shuttle and there's a Thai restaurant a couple of blocks away.
I hugged the saint about a week ago. There are signs recommending that you don't (for sanitary reasons) but you still can. I did it twice, once in the afternoon when there was a huge line and it felt weird and rushed and once before the 930 mass...
