Listening to music while on the camino

200+ days on Camino. I listen to music about 10% of the time.

Via de la Plata/Sanabres to Ourense or to Astorga? So confused!

It looks like Guy walked from Ourense, only the last 100 km (or so) of the Sanabres/Vdlp. Also, if anyone is planning this route in 2024, the Castro Dozon albergue is closed, seemingly permanently.

    It's been done before... cutlery/bowl/cup?

We each take a microwave cup, a small bowl with a tight lid, a spork, and a pocket knife. The bowl is uselful for taking leftovers on the trail. Obviously, other folks might not find these to be needed, but we find them worth the few ounces.

Muxia to Madrid on same day

This is exactly what we are planning to do near the end of March (actually we may be returning to Santiago from Finisterre, not sure yet). But either way the morning bus from the coast should give us time to catch an afternoon high speed train back to Madrid. I would suggest buying the train...

Buying bus / train tickets in Spain

Twice in the last few years I have found trains from Santiago to Madrid sold out well in advance. It was not this way 10 years ago. I always buy mine in advance now. I use Rick Steves website to buy tickets because it is so easy, although they do charge a service fee.

Albergues - Need to book in September 2024?

I would suggest you monitor the Camino Frances activity on the forum in May 2024. September and May have similar numbers leaving St. Jean each year. This would give you a very good idea what September will be like.

LIVE from the Camino VdlP starting May 6

To Monesterio: we stayed in the Parochiol albergue in Monesterio. It really is shame it is so little known. One of the nicest albergue anywhere. And still only 10E. To Fuente de Cantos: We stayed at El Zaguan apartments, and were glad we had made reservations. There is still one very tricky...

To Castilblanco: A beautiful walk, but more uphill than I remember (five years older legs?). The municipal albergue is open and was almost full on May 7. In my opinion, the hospitaleros drank far too much alcohol that day. It was a shame for him to have caused such a scene. I will not give...

LIVE from the Camino VdlP starting May 6

To Guillena: we stayed in Hostal B&B Naranja about 1 km northwest of the cathedral. It is simple, but OK. We caught the river path just as the sun rose, refilled our water bottles in Santiponce, and then came the first long hot straight stretch of this route. The Luz Camino albergue in Guillena...

We plan to start in Seville this Friday. We've started a new blog, and we'll be updating it and posting in this thread as often as wifi allows. It sounds like we will have plenty of company along the way. This will be a different kind of Camino for us. In the past we've walked almost 100% of the...

OBSOLETE COVID THREAD Current Covid impacts on the Camino?? Input from current walkers appreciated!

Camino07: You say that you "feel sorry for the ones who don't book and get turned away". Are you seeing this often? Is the VdlP so busy that albergues are full, or you talking about private rooms only? We are planning to leave Seville next week and are trying to determine whether to book ahead...

    Ticks on the Frances?

On many Caminos, one tick. I picked it up along the brushy trail between Valcarlos and Roncesvalles, which is really a unique section of the Camino Frances. I saw it on my arm before it had a chance to bite. As other folks have said, most Caminos are along wide paths where a tick would need to...

LIVE from the Camino The Writers on the VdlP

Anna, it looks like the weather in Spain at the moment is cooler than is typical for late April. Four weeks from now, in Salamanca, heat will probably be more of a concern than cold. We begin the Vdlp in two weeks, and plan to be in Salamanca about May 24, maybe we will cross paths. It would be...

San Salvador accommodations May 2022 - not much available?

Jim, your story is a good word of caution. I live in Colorado and do steep climbs regularly. I was still shocked at the Salvador Camino elevation totals. I broke up this route into 6 days, and still felt like it was right at my limit. Of course, there are folks who do it in 5 or even 4 days, but...

San Salvador accommodations May 2022 - not much available?

BobY333: We are also planning a similar route this spring. It seems to me that albergues will be opening as the weather warms. It probably doesn't seem like it, but I'm confident of many changes between now and mid-May. Have you seen the San Salvador FB pages? There are updates almost daily from...
