Comment by 'nilesite' in media 'Plaza de Obradoiro year 1900'

This is the official installation of the statue of Eugenio Montero Rios in 1916. It's in the Plaza Mazarelos now. What's left of it. More interesting is the balconies across the facade of the parador are gone here. There are earlier photos from the 19th c. showing them, but not here.

Washing a Pilgrim's Feet at the Cathedral

I think it's fairly safe to say it didn't happen to anyone else.

Washing a Pilgrim's Feet at the Cathedral

Thank you. I'm writing a book and I need to be able to say one way or the other if this was done in recent memory.

Washing a Pilgrim's Feet at the Cathedral

I reminded my daughters every day we walked to make sure their fannies were clean. I have several 19th c. accounts too - nowhere does it say anything about feet washing in Santiago anywhere.

Washing a Pilgrim's Feet at the Cathedral

Yeah. I thought of that too - it was July.

Washing a Pilgrim's Feet at the Cathedral

Ha! Lavacolla is meant to remind us that pilgrim hygiene is important! She is quite specific to being in the Cathedral. If it's her imagination, that's fine. I'm seeing if anyone else knows about this as a practice.

Washing a Pilgrim's Feet at the Cathedral

In Shirley MacLaine's book, she says that when she arrived at the Cathedral, her credencial was stamped and a priest bathed her feet. This was in July 2000. Does anyone of that era or before have any experience with feet being washed upon a pilgrim's arrival?

    No Compostela for You!

I'm so sorry your wife injured her knees, and that you didn't get the paper to take home with you. I'm troubled that you would criticize your colleagues who started their way after you. While it can be disappointing not to get the Compostela because you weren't willing to change a bus ticket...

Costco duvets are back, and improved

I brought one along on the Primitivo in July and loved it. It weighed 8 oz fewer than my sleeping bag, took way less room in my bag, and was really warm. It's the way I go from now on.
