No, I imagine no one is walking the Syrian path these days, although a friend of a friend biked into Georgia to cover the war with Russia a few years ago. He said the locals knew not to shoot him because his Russian was so poor . . .
I'm not actively planning anything right now, but I'm...
Would this be feasible for anyone who does not have EU citizenship? I don't think I'd be able to make it from Santiago to Jerusalem in the 90 days that my tourist visa allows :)
I can't help much, but I met some who had walked from Essen so crossing France and Northern Europe is possible. He stayed in monasteries or slept the woods, mostly, but he made it alright even in winter with no French or Spanish. Interesting dude.
Anyway, these might help (particularly with...
Glad to hear you are in Spain now!
Also, no one else mentioned this -- but the fear is natural, and in fact I think that the fear is part of the camino. It may not go away, but you'll learn how to exist with it instead of being controlled by it; being afraid is one way to know that you're...
If you have a bit of time in Barcelona, you might check out the monastery of Montserrat . . . amazing place and the destination for a fair number of smaller pilgrimages. Some people even start there for Santiago, joining the Camino Frances at Puenta la Reina or Pamplona.
Buen Camino!
There will be a couple of long days, and it'd be a shame to miss that walk down the valley through Samos, but it's probably doable if you're in decent shape (mostly your feet and how tough they are). In winter it would be harder, just because you'd run out of sunlight, but you should be okay in...
I recommend it wholeheartedly. In fact, I met a pilgrim in Puenta la Reina who (dismayed with the clamor of pilgrims on the Camino Frances) borrowed my guidebook and decided to walk it backwards to the Camino Catalan, and from there to Montserrat and Barcelona. It's very quiet, if that's what...
I agree with Annie, Ruesta and Arres are not to be missed!
You can follow the road, too, from the old San Juan de La Pena monastery down to the town below. This is a few extra KMs but is much less rough. I had to walk it by starlight after overestimating the availability of lodging on the...
For anyone thinking of taking this route, I second DSouthard's comment. I walked from Barcelona last winter and the contrast between the Camino Frances and everything else makes it feel almost like two different caminos. Can't recommend it enough.
Enjoying the blog, DSouthard! Especially the...
I used two of their guides -- one for the Camino Barcelona, and one for the Camino Catalan. I got them both in paperback from a little shop in the Gothic quarter of Barcelona (it was in an alley with a mosaic of St. James over it, I figured it was a good sign!).
Useful stuff, although only in...
I met a pilgrim who'd started in Essen and had an interesting perspective on it. He said:
"There is no best time for a pilgrimage. You go when you can and you leave from where you are."
And I think I agree with him. I walked in November, December, and January -- and I wouldn't have done it...
Two days outside of Huesca currently . . . it's not toooooo cold, but I spent one very upleasant night outside due to bad planning (and no tent). So yeah, it is doable, although I have spent a fair number of nights in pensions. That's par for the course for the cami catalan, though, from what...
Quick update:
Between cutting holes in socks and untying the tops of my boots, I seem to have solved the problem. Three 25km days in a row, with only discomfort instead of pain. If anyone else ends up having this problem, make sure that you remove as much pressure from that part of the ankle...
Thanks so much for the replies! I ended up taking a rest day yesterday in Montserrat, and the other pilgrim at the monastery gave me a nearly empty tube of ointment that will hold me over until I get to a pharmacy. So there's two of the solutions right there . . . they already feel much better...
I'm walking the camino right now from Barcelona and have run into a bit of a problem.
About six hours in, I started getting shooting pains from behind the outside knob on my right ankle up my leg. Three days in my left ankle began doing the same thing. After two days of experimentation (where...
