You know you are a seasoned pilgrim, when you

Say "Buen Camino" to a weather-beater stranger with a rucksack weeks after you get back home to England. And don't feel foolish afterwards.

    Scheduling too much?

Hi Francie, I recently returned from walking a section of the Via de la Plata over about 2 weeks. I estimated my times based on approx 3 miles per hour, and that is what my actual walking speed was, with a pack weighing approx 8 kg (including water and food!) Average distances per day were 30...

    Kit for camino??

Wow LT! That is some serious lightweight stuff and walking with 5.5 kg sounds superb. It means you must be able to easily carry the required water (at least 2 litres I reckon on some days) without killing your knees. I got my husband to vet my kit and have thrown out my bodywarmer and...

    Kit for camino??

Thanks for the tips. My pack is an Osprey Kestrel 68 and weighs in 1.47 kg including waterproof cover. I have already got a lighter one in the past 12 months but am reluctant to get one too light as they can become almost fragile when they get ultra-light. I have cut off loads of unnecessary...

    Depression

Hello Abbeydore. I have skirted around the edges of depression for the last 20 years and feel for you. I hope that having a dog helps. It should! I hope so much to have a dog as soon as I retire from my rewarding but very demanding job as Head of Year in a Secondary School in Wiltshire. I have...

    Kit for camino??

this is the final list of kit I will be taking (and wearing) to Peublo de Sanabria on Monday 6th August. Why oh why does it still weigh 7.7 kg!!! I guess the handbag is a luxury and the phone weight loads too.

    Backpack Features to Look For

I just spent about 30 minutes cutting off extra straps and shortening other straps on my (otherwise great) Osprey pack. So my tip is - be ruthless!!! I have had the pack for a year now and surely if I was going to use the "Stow on the Go" feature I would have done so by now!!

    10-15 Days: Which Camino?

Hello Canada, I believe there are few monasteries on any camino and have heard that the monastery at Oseira is less enthusiasistic about taking in pilgrims these days. I am passing there in about 10 days so will try to let you know the full story by posting something on the forum. If I were...

How to pack quickly for the camino.. This will make you smil

Hello travellers, I found this link to a video of someone packing their pack in under 2 minutes. It is well worth a watch or two.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-rnfp1H ... e=youtu.be Happy walking, Rachel

    Good vibes : local walks

What joy to read about local walks as I plan my spell on the Camino (setting off for part of the Camino de la Plata in a week. Yikes!!!) I love to think of people who do not know England exploring our hills and dales as I book accommodation in Finisterra, with no real idea of the culture there...

    Lonesome Trail???

Thanks for your top David from Victoria. The weather has just changed for the better in southern England, with temperatures jumping from 15 tot 25/26 degrees C in a matter of days. I, along with half of Britain (probably), now have mild sunburn on my arms. And this heat is nothing compared to the...

Multi-purpose Buff - any more ideas???

Dear travellers, never underestimate the importance and versatility of a buff. Bev's camino buff saved the day last April!! I was suffering from some particularly sore thigh chafing and at my wits end when I looked at Bev's buff and realised it could double as a leg-protecter. With my other...

    Lonesome Trail???

Thanks for the helpful info everyone. In answer to Davroos's question" why are you not picking up from where you left off?" I am led to understand the temperature in August between Merida and Salamanca is likely to be just hideous. I thought I would start further north and get to the sea, where...

    Lonesome Trail???

Thanks for your prompt and helpful replies Falcon and John. So no spooky deserted albergues this time! My heart is lighter. Rachel

    Lonesome Trail???

Hello any pilgrims out there, I am starting my second leg of the Via de la Plata on August 7th this year, walking from Peublo de Sanabria to Muxia via Santiago (of course via Santiago - it would be weird if I avoided the great mecca itself!). Only 3 weeks away! I walked from Seville to Merida...
