I started from Sarria with my 18 year old granddaughter last year. She hadn't been to Europe before so we flew into Paris for a few days before flying to Santiago. I had done the Camino Frances before and I picked Sarria as our starting point as I knew it was a very social section of the Camino...
I enjoy cafe con leche!
I did not drink coffee until my first trip to Europe. The coffee in Europe is served at a drinkable temperature where coffee in North America is too hot and it is a danger to my mouth. I made the mistake of ordering a takeout coffee in Venice one time and everyone glared...
I did the Camino last year with my 18 year old granddaughter and she met lots of people. Some were in their twenties but one of her best friends on the camino was in her fifties. One of the best parts of the camino is meeting people from all over the world. Both of us learned a lot from...
Yes. We have AirTags in all our luggage and my camera bags. I lost a camera in Iceland last year and didn’t have an AirTag attached to the camera. I’m currently working on a project with Small Rig to discreetly attach AirTags to cameras so thieves do not see them immediately. I do not want lose...
I only used my iPhone on my first camino and this year I brought my little Sony with an 18-135 zoom, a little Oben tripod (550 grams) and a bluetooth remote. This gave me the flexibility and creative freedom I'm used to but less weight than my full-frame gear. It's the gear I take whenever I'm...
I have extra wide feet 4E and I wore a pair of Dunham Addisons when I did the Camino Frances. They are also available in 6E. I also use the Superfeet Green Wide inserts. I tried all "fit's wide" shoes at the local hiking stores but they just caused me immediate pain when I tried them on in the...
I took the Aegismax on my last Camino and I’m planning to use it again on my next. It’s very light and compresses to a small package. On one very cold night in an unheated albergue I had to wear extra clothes in the sleeping bag. I’d recommend avoiding unheated albergues!
There is bus service most places and you will see lots of taxi stickers on every post. I took the bus one day when my feet were bothering me and I handed the bus driver a €20 note and he was very annoyed as the fare was about €2. I was surprised. I also took a side trip one day to Bilbao to see...
I think the above answers the SIM card question but there is one more issue. Most Canadian financial institutions are starting to implement two factor identification for security where they send a code to your Canadian phone number. This is a concern for me and I'm planning to contact my bank...
There is a very good hiking shop across the street from the Pilgrims Office in SJPdP but I don't remember if they have wooden hiking poles. I suspect this shop or the Pilgrims Office can help you find a place to get a wooden staff.
I'm in the wear one wash one group with an extra pair of socks. When I was crossing the Pyrenees in April I did take a ratty old pair of long underwear and gloves which I tossed when I reached Pamplona.
I used the Guthook Guide for my Camino Frances in 2019. I used it the most of apps I had and it is very good for some things but it also has some problems. You can use it off-line and you do not need a data connection. It was excellent for displaying how far to the next town, item of interest...
I finished the Camino Frances on May 11th and I rarely booked ahead. I'd recommend walking the distance your feet can do each day and this will vary depending on aches and pains, good and bad days. There were several occasions when people told me there were no beds showing on Booking.com in the...
I took a small tripod with me similar to the Pixi Evo and I recommend sliding some rubber washers/o-rings onto each leg so you can hook the tripod on church pews, chair backs and other small ledges to make your tripod more versatile. You can pick up the washers in any hardware store for about...
I had a little scare yesterday in Portomarín when I went to the albergue to find a bed. They told me a group had booked a 170 beds in town. They had booked all the 10€ beds so I upgraded to a 35€ room and had no problem. There always seems to be a solution to finding a bed.
