Inviting reflections on the wider costs of walking a Camino

Flying from Australia to Europe is always going to be the highest environmental impact through carbon emissions on any Camino and I do struggle at times with the apparent selfish nature of that action. Once in Europe we try to travel by train wherever possible. Might even consider traveling home...

    Altra Sale

Hopefully they take the opportunity to improve the issue they have with the Olympus 5. My pair had the sole de-laminate on the Frances this September after only 300kms of use. I contacted Altra and they said this was a known problem and to super glue the sole back together! The shoes did just...

Cycling Camino from Pamplona to Santiago in May-June 2024

I cycled the CF in 2016 and just back from walking SJpdP to SdC last month. Best advice I can offer is make sure your bike has a bell and use it. Most peregrinos would agree that a bell is the most effective and friendliest way to negotiate passing on the trail. Hope you find some travelling...

Cruz de Ferro landscaping work - Gronze article

A public toilet would be good addition - but do we really want to ruin the ‘atmosphere’? 🤣

LIVE from the Camino O Pedrouzo to Santiago - another wet day

Trained from Santiago to Madrid today and was pleasantly reacquainted with sunshine! Good luck to all still slogging through the wet out there 🌨️

Kumano Kodo - Santiago Dual Pilgrims - now over 4,000

Yesterday my wife Margaret registered her dual pilgrim status with the tourist office in Santiago. They were happy to do this and the other staff all seemed to be part of the experience including a lovely certificate, dual pilgrim pin and photo for the dual pilgrim website. Margaret had produced...

LIVE from the Camino 28 km walk from Palas se Rei in the rain

Personally I was happy to be walking in the rain. It would have been so cramped noisy and steamy on those busses! 🙄 Just felt the sun shinning for 10 minutes now we have arrived in Santiago and had a little time to dry off. In the end I guess it’s only water 😀

    Race today Melide-Santiago

Apparently it was a running race from Sarria to Santiago with a 24hour cutoff to finish. 110kms in under 24hours is one heck of a bed race. We were passed by many of the runners between Sarria and Palas de Reí yesterday. They were very considerate and gave peregrinos space and best wishes.

LIVE from the Camino The September Wave: Increase in Pilgrims and Availability of Beds

Staying off stage seems to be helping but as you approach the larger cities the bottlenecks are reforming. Will be walking 30km tomorrow as there is not a bed to be had in Mansilla de las Mulas as we head for León. There are a few large groups that we are trying to be out of sync with but are...

LIVE from the Camino The September Wave: Increase in Pilgrims and Availability of Beds

I’m currently enjoying a night in San Bol albergue and though we are not booking ahead we are finding that many people are doing just that although some seem a little shy about admitting that. As we walked through Hornillos del Camino around midday the private albergues were completo and the...

LIVE from the Camino The September Wave: Increase in Pilgrims and Availability of Beds

I’m in Pamplona tonight 21 September and there does not seem to be a problem with numbers nor did there appear to have been in Zubiri last night so all may be well for the road ahead.

LIVE from the Camino The September Wave: Increase in Pilgrims and Availability of Beds

Arrived in Roncesvalles yesterday 19 September to find many more pilgrims than expected. The albergue was totally full with peregrinos turned away. Dutch volunteers feel that the early September wave is extending well into the third week. Let’s hope things become less hectic past Pamplona.

What to do with the bike box after unpacking your bike?

Left mine at Bayonne railway station after checking with the counter staff as to where it could be left for recycling or disposal.

Busy Camino del Norte in September?

I'm also planning on walking the Norte from mid September from Irun joining the Primitivo to Melide so have similar thoughts. From reading the many previous threads regarding the crowding or otherwise being experienced/expected I'm planning on booking the first few nights and then letting actual...

    Paris to Bayonne October

I too have previously taken the flight option as the easiest but this year we are choosing to stay overnight in Paris and train to Bayonne and SJPdP as the significantly lower carbon emissions were a consideration.
