I walked in 2019 as well. I found the Kumano Travel service to be great, and they are local, so supporting them means I am supporting the local economy. Going through other companies outside of Japan takes money away from the KK.
Most people who complain about the process are not aware of the...
People make it really difficult. More than it needs to be. I prefer Orange or Vodafone in Spain and Portugal, respectively. I still recommend calling Verizon to verify your phone is unlocked. It doesn't hurt to be sure.
Rosemary, I have Verizon with an iPhone 4S and I'll tell you what I did. I called Verizon and asked to have them unlock my phone. Then when I got to Spain, I went to an Orange store and said in my broken Spanish "necesito una SIM card por mi iPhone. Mucho internet, no telefono" I paid 10€ for...
First off, never buy currency. Get it at the ATM at the airport when you land. You get a better exchange rate. Second, my budget of 30€ a day did not include alcohol other than the bottle of wine you get at dinner with the menu del dia. Beer is probably going to run 2-3€ a pint.
True NicoZ but for $25 on a SIM card in Spain you get at least 1GB of data. If you want overpay for services, go for it. I think everyone should hear both sides and make their own decision based on their needs.
Since the forum is so incredibly slow, I'll probably not respond much more to...
Point is, using a SIM card in country is not a hassle and it's cheaper than Verizon's measly 100mb of data. I use Skype to talk to family. It's free and used very little of my data. I did keep track. iMessages don't count against your text message allotment either. I never stood in line...
Good for you. Walk your own walk. I know for a fact if I had not had my phone on my last walk I would have been screwed. If you read my blog post I shared you would know why.
I also know you only get one first Camino. I'll be interested to hear how it goes a second time around. I know my two...
Here's an old blog post that should answer your questions: http://renegadepilgrim.com/renegadepilgr/2013/2/1/camino-tech-talk-cell-phones-on-the-camino
I haven't used a Spot. I just text (iMessage) or email family from the Camino. It's cheaper and lighter. SIM cards are cheap in Spain. So is the unlimited data plans. I understand the allure of the Spot but for the Camino it's overkill.
Yep. Tis true. It wouldn't hurt to carry earplugs to hand out but I doubt you'd want to carry the weight! ;)
Walk your own walk. I try to stay away from too much information. All it does is cloud your experience. I'm thankful I didn't read too much about the Camino before I walked.
