Portugal Weather - Pilgrims - best time to walk

I just finished a hike from Lisboa to Santiago, March 12 to April 10, 2015. I got one day of drizzle. The mornings were a bit chilly, but for the most part, the weather was perfect for walking. I highly recommend March to April to walk in Portugal.

Stage 1: Lisbon to Vila Franca de Xira > Considerations

Metro station in Povoa. I looped back via metro to Lisboa and then back to Povoa the next day.

    Why not start in Azambuja?

Good idea. There is another marked route that starts west of Villa Nova de Reina. Azambuja is a good place to start IMO. I started from Lisboa and had some ugly patches. I also recommend the walk from Santarem to Fatima. IT IS LOVELY

19 year old son leaves next week - help an anxious mother 16,000km away

I spent around 1200 euros over my 30 day trip and hike from Lisboa to Santiago. I stayed in alot of Albergues (but some 5 stars) and never missed a meal. I ate alot of Octopus.... :)

19 year old son leaves next week - help an anxious mother 16,000km away

DarnTough Socks are the best in the world and have an unconditional lifetime guarantee. I have gotten three replacement pairs of socks during my long(4000 km) hikes.

19 year old son leaves next week - help an anxious mother 16,000km away

A rain jacket will be FINE against cold if you layer your clothing. Lets assume the lad is not a dim wit and can layer clothing. I hiked the Appalachian Trail in 0c weather for about a month with a gore tex rainjacket, a fleece and long underwear. Asics are better. The lighter the shoe the...

    From Lisbon

To avoid the north POrto slog, take the metro to Maia. No shame in that game.

    From Lisbon

I hit povoa my first day out of Lisboa. I took the metro back to Lisboa to my hotel and then the train back to Povoa the next day. NOTE Brierly's guide has the Povoa metro station in the WRONG place. It is a KM or more south of where it is in Brierly guidebook.

    From Lisbon

I just finished a camino from Lisboa to Santiago. You may want to consider doing an alternate route from some place like Sienna or jump ahead to Azambuja. While there are friendly people and some nice spots, there are some long slogs through the sections within the municipality of Lisboa...

Just finished - Camino Portugues from Valenca

Congratulations! I just finished Caminho Tejo/Caminho Compostela from Lisbon to Santiago. The Portuguese people (generally) are very friendly and kind. I highly recommend staying Seminario Menor and Hospederia San Martinho Pinario in Santiago. They are very atmospheric and connect you to the...

    Fatima pilgrimage

I started the Camino Portuguese headed for Compostela, but instead did the Camino Tejo to Fatima, and then took a bus from Fatima to Tomar and started the Camino de Santiago from Tomar. The Convento de Christo makes a great spiritual/historic place to start. The bus from Fatima to Tomar (the...

    Fatima pilgrimage

I found the hike from Santarem to be extremely peaceful and beautiful. There is an Alberque 200 m from the trail near Aviala. There are also a couple of pensao/residentials. In Amero das Milharicas, there is Casa O Primo Basilio. The Owner is older and speaks no English (some French and...
