I cant seem to find a recent Michelin guide...the one on Amazon is 2013, Nor a Miam Miam Dodo - Saint Jaques de Compostelle - GR65 that is in English under $44? Does anyone have better links?
Depends... what are you going to do with it? Daytrips, Camino, Thru-hike the PCT? Go to REI and try a few out. It's one of your most important investments so don't cheap out. Btw REI & Osprey offer a lifetime warranty. I waited for a deal and got my Osprey Exos 48 Blaze Black L for $125 bucks...
Want to have a nice experience? Make it simple...enjoy the time with your son. Walk Pamplona to Burgos! Next year you two can come back and do another portion. Assuming you're still speaking. I can share our itinerary with you if you choose to do my suggestion.
Everyone assumes they will complete the Camino but many don't. Even so, it doesn't make the walk any less special of an experience. Don't overthink things.
We never stayed in an albergue just for that reason, thankfully our budget allowed us a room with a toilet every night. However, I think we may have missed the camaraderie of meeting people.
