    Checking your backpack on flights

I checked my pack since I also had hiking poles. My airline had free large, clear plastic bags for enclosing infant car seats - perfect for protecting my pack and the straps on conveyor belts etc. The bag was resilient enough that I saved it for the trip home!

Flying from Vancouver - better to fly Paris to Biarritz or take the train?

I flew Seattle > Vancouver > Paris & changed airports to fly to > Biarritz, and then did a van shuttle to SJPdP. I booked the van weeks ahead and the cost decreased as others booked the same shuttle after me. I started the Camino the next day. However I took a rest day in Pamplona, which was...

Camino Frances in May or June - which would you prefer?

In 2018 I left StJdP on 25 May and arrived in SDC on 25 June. It was just a tad cool to start but never got unbearably warm in late June. (A few hot days, but not everyday.) I’m also told I beat the big surge of hikers who start in June.

Bringing things home from Santiago — what to buy?

I brought home a dozen tiles or refrigerator magnets with the yellow arrow or scallop design. They made great gifts for the family members and friends who were my encouragers to undertake the Camino Frances. They loved the arrow's literal and metaphorical reminder to pay attention to the trail...

What's the one thing in your pack, that you absolutely CANNOT do without...and why?

I took an 8 ft long charging cable and a charger with multiple USB ports. Plugging into an outlet to charge and share the other ports was very handy. And the long cable meant I didn't have to leave my phone charging out of sight in a cafe or albergue.

    Daydreaming about sangria and paella

I'm right there too. Only had paella twice on my Camino...but Mmm.

What to pack for my First Camino?

I’m prone to leg cramps so the extra potassium etc in the flavored hydration packets/tablets were a safeguard. Not crucial, really just a preference on some long, hot strenuous days!

What to pack for my First Camino?

Two things I haven’t seen above: 1) an extra long charging cable with a multi-USB plug - I could share an outlet with others and the long cord was handy when the power source wasn’t next to me; 2) hydration/vitamin packets or tablets - add to your bottle of water to prevent dehydration and cramping.

Advice of those who have walked May/June

I hiked SJPDP to Santiago last year, 22 May to 25 June, and had rain every few days over the first couple of weeks, and a couple times I was wet nearly to the skin. Later, the Ponferrada to Santiago stretch had several days in the 90 degree F range. Nothing stopped my daily plans, and you adjust...

Please need some advice from the veterans

I just finished the Camino 3 weeks ago and did this exact thing: a doughnut shaped moleskin around a big blister. It takes the direct pressure off the blister. If you are concerned about infection - I agree that getting it looked at sounds very prudent.

Rehydration and electrolytes on the Camino Portugues

I took EmergenC’s hydration packets along and added one to liter of water every day. Very light and cheap; I think I had a packet of 20 or so. Also bought Aquilea Magnesio+Potasio tablets at a Farmacia in Spain.

Why should you Over-Night before SJPdP

I’m on the Camino Frances right now and did exactly as aname4 described. I was pretty certain that the time change (I flew from Seattle), lack of good sleep and several days of walking and shocking my feet would warrant benefit a rest day for sleep and a slow stroll around Pamplona. (Which was...

What happens when you can't find a place to sleep?

Re pensiones: are they easily found or identified? I leave in 4 days and want to stay/sleep/rest 2 nights in a few places - and preferably not in an albergue. Clues to finding or spotting them?

    Starting from SJPdP May 22nd

I’m starting May 22. Perhaps we’ll see each other in the pilgrims office. BTW, In case you’re interested: I fly into St Biarritz on the 21st and have booked a ride in an EXPRESS BOURRICOT van to SJDP leaving the airport about 16:00. I understand it’s about an hour drive. The more folks in the...

    Rain gear in June?

That’s my hunch, that hiking mostly in June I’ll have a few days of rain. Carrying full rain gear is most likely unnecessary and extra weight. I’ll keep looking for a packable rain jacket or poncho. Thanks
