Why multiple times on the CF?

Reasons to repeat the Frances .... 1. I know now what I didn't know then. 2. As a solo traveller I would feel more comfortable going "off the beaten path" so to speak. (First time I sorta, kinda, followed a guide). 3. My expectations are different the second time around and by different I...

Looking for Best Pilgrim Common Meal

Albergue Victoria in Ciruena was wonderful. I think there were about 15 of us, the food was fantastic, the company even better.

    CF - Albergue Kitchen Etiquette?

Or you could take the opportunity to instruct them on the correct use. You don't have to announce you are a chef .... many a great home cook knows how to use a knife properly (just sayin'). Unfortunately I told someone what I do for a profession and I became the nursemaid. I would more than...

    CF - Albergue Kitchen Etiquette?

Funny story (sort of anyway). I was staying in a very small village albergue and had stopped early because of the heat. Sitting out on a patio area was a group enjoying an afternoon beverage (or two or three). The most prominent couple (older, loud, boisterous) were not staying at the albergue...

    Tarta de Santiago

Copy a picture and cut your own stencil would be the cheapest and easiest, light cardboard and a xacto knife

What to drink in Spain II

In my experience, a red wine is best served slightly below room temperature. When the room temperature is 35C then a room temperature wine would be, to me, unpleasantly warm. I do not find it uncommon for red wine to be chilled throughout many European countries. I prefer a chilled red wine...

    Walking in the rain

I live on the wet coast so rain is part of life but oh my goodness the rain in Spain just about did me in. Walking on the highway in heavy heavy rain and wind because if you walked on the trail the water was well over ankle deep. If it hadn't been for a young German girl who went by singing I...

    Daily laundry perplexes me

I washed my clothes when convenient esp. when there was a washing machine. Having said that, I would rather smell body odor than stale cigarette smoke and trust me, people coming in from their last cigarette and beer and going straight to their bed smelled far worse, to me, than any body odor.

What's the Camino routine - 1st time on pilgrimage

I came home calling the Spanish beer a restorative/tincture/medicinal need .... I always felt much better after a Spanish beer but rarely do I indulge in a daily beer here at home and never does it seem as restorative to my soul

Funny ... that is what I say about the beer.

No more Botafumeiro 19.30 Friday mass

And for me, and speaking only for me, if I had attended a mass and the the butafumeiro was used just as a happen-chance I would have been thrilled and yes, it would have been an amazing Camino bonus. It would have created, again for me only, a less circus like atmosphere and would have been...

No more Botafumeiro 19.30 Friday mass

But it doesn't catch you by surprise, its planned and the majority of the people at the mass I attended were there, imho, not for the mass but for the "show" and that is the word I will use. People were pushing and shoving, they were being horridly disrespectful of the poor ushers who were...

What's the Camino routine - 1st time on pilgrimage

A bar in Spain is where you will engage with some of the most amazing people. It is where you will have some hearty laughs that bring tears to your eyes and where you will have some deep conversations that bring you to tears. A bar in Spain is where you will find out more about yourself than...

Yet another thread about walking alone

But just when I would think I was in the clear I would sit down to dinner and hear that voice !! That voice would make me drop my head to my hands and cry a little tear and shake my head and say no ... no... it can't be. Yet, it was.
