Do I need Spanish skills for the Mozarabe?

Maybe reach out to @debigetsout she’s walking the Mozárabe as we speak and is posting a regular blog. Their experience is current and probably more relevant. Buen camino

    Sunglasses

https://www.aao.org/eye-health/diseases/top-sunglasses-tips Couple of thoughts from US optometrist association. Mirror the sun safe recommendations in Oz. Contrary to other comments, blocking UV is the biggest consideration. Buen camino

Is the Ingles Social or Solitary?

Hi @ShoshTrvls Like Rachel, I walked the Ingles last year in late August/early September. My observations were that it can be as social as you want to make it. Plenty of people and some of the Municipal Albergues were full (but was always able to find a bed where I wanted to stay). Making...

My sleeping bag is too tight

Hola @falconbrother Having just completed the CF (again) in July last year, my experience was that I didn’t need a sleeping bag. I only used a sleeping bag liner (cotton-silk blend). I carried “The Lazy Bear” Down Camping Blanket. As my mates kept reminding/asking me was I carrying just to...

    Finisterre to Santiago?

Hola @KJFSophie walked Santiago to Muxia on to Finisterre and then back to Santiago in September this year. Toughest climb was heading out of Cee, approx 2km of reasonably tough climbing. Was raining and slippery. There were a couple of sharp descents between Finisterre and Cee. After the...

    Pocket knives on trains

This is an old thread, but thought I’d update with current experience for those scanning through. Things have changed in our World. Security has been ramped up, particularly around knives and scissors carried on trains in Spain from certain places. Recently caught the train from Santiago to...

    Portuguese Drivers

Motor-Vehicle Deaths in the U.S. Compared to the World Road safety in the United States lags other high-income countries The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducted a study comparing the United States to 28 other high-income countries regarding road safety in 2015 and 2019...

    Managing electronics

Hola @Kathy F. have simplified my electronics down to: - iPhone - Garmin watch; and - small power pack This means I only need to take a 4 USB outlet/plug (bought one in Paris) plus 2 cables: - Garmin watch cable: and - a single multi-plug cable (micro, USB-C, Apple Lightning). I use the 4...

For those who have walked the Camino 2 or more times

Hola @MARSKA Have walked the CF a few times, biggest gap was 20 years. Smallest was 18 months. Each time I found and experienced some amazing people, locations and food. A wise pilgrim many years ago said to me that if I intended to walk the same route again try to mix it up. Stay in...

    COVID My Camino Covid experience

I think the challenge is that regardless of the quality of a mask, if it is not properly fitted the value diminishes quickly. As hikers/walkers that can be a challenge, particularly remembering to fit one as we roll into the next town, focussed only on that most important cafe or cafe con...

    Portuguese Drivers

I think it was @NorthernLight who posted on another thread that it was Spanish Law requirement for people walking on roads to wear high visibility vests. I’m trying to track it down. Wondering if that also applies in Portugal? Having said that I haven’t seen many pilgrims doing that…a quick...

    Portuguese Drivers

Having recently completed the Porto to Santiago, and then a number of other Caminos (Invierno, Inglés, Muxia etc) back-to-back my experience has been that Portuguese drivers didn’t seem to be any worse or better than other drivers. What I did note, was that the route plays a big part in the car...

    Wearing glasses when it rains

@Luka I tried one of these. It was as good as useless. Personally I use a hiking Umbrella (extendable arm) that attaches to my shoulder strap and ties into my hip belt. Expensive, maybe (€40). But for those of us who have to travel distances to get to Spain (or, or the like) expense is a...

    "Itchy" backpack straps

Similar to the ones I purchased. Had the same issue with the width. Have punched some shoe eyelets (3 points - 6 eyelets in total on each cover) into the velcro parts and laced them up. That has worked a treat for me.

    "Itchy" backpack straps

Hi @Camino Chrissy I similarly had these (those) types of problems with my Osprey backpack. A good friend suggested using lambs wool car seat strap covers. Since using them the problem seems to have disappeared. Just finished 5 back to back Caminos (~1k km) without issue. The covers need...
