Weather mid-March to mid-April from Pavia?

I walked from Lucca to Rome starting on March 7 and the weather was great for hiking. Cool to start the day but by end of the day we were always just wearing shirts. There was occasional rain but no daylong events.

La Via di Francesco - steep increase in numbers

I walked from Rome to Florence this fall- late September and early October. Most people were walking the opposite direction so we would see them around lunch time. There were more people from Assisi to Rome, but never more than 20 per day and after Assisi we would only see at most 10 per day...

    Besancon to Ornans

I did the same stretch back in 2019. It was equally confusing but very nice hike. I enjoyed a great evening in Ornans. The next couple days of hiking will be very beautiful. Enjoy.

    Viterbo

I just walked the Viterbo to Vetralla route yesterday. I don’t know what the B21 route is but I left town near the McDonalds on Via San Paolo - and then took the variant up the sunken road - it was easy to follow from the Cathedral in Viterbo down behind the back of the Papal Palace and out to...

2023 Roll Call for Via Francigena

I walked in April - May 2019 - pre Covid days so I don’t know how valid this is. I did not carry a tent or sleeping bag, just a liner. I made some reservations ahead - particularly between Reims and Besancon- where there are long distances between towns. I found that food was a bigger issue...

    Curious about your VF experiences

There is an excellent museum/exhibit just out of Arras if you have an opportunity to visit of the Wellington miners from New Zealand and the brief breakthrough they were able to make in the defense of Arras by digging tunnels and surprising the Germans. Unfortunately, it stalled and just lead...

    Vercelli to Rome March 13

I am due to leave Vercelli on March 13 but am concerned about walking into what appears to be a quarantine zone. Is there anybody hiking in Northern Italy now that can give me any insights?

    VF from London

The tourist office in Dover had a nice stamp. In France, a lot of the Mairie’s had stamps.

Routes from Pontarlier to Jounge - a question

i reviewed the route that you marked in Way Marked Trails and it is the route I walked. We walked up to the Chateau du Roux and it was a steep climb but it was worth it even in bad weather. There was a small bar next to the Chateau that you can stop for coffee and snacks. There looks like a way...

Routes from Pontarlier to Jounge - a question

I took the railway option in May, 2019. It had been quite rainy weather and the hills above were very muddy and there had been heavy vehicles stirring up the mud and making hiking difficult.

    Martigny to Sembrancher

I did this section in late May this year in nice clear weather. I didn’t read my Lightfoot guide until after my walk and not sure what I would have done if I had. There were a few areas washed out from winter and it was a difficult day and I was glad for the ropes and wires in spots and for my...

    Via Francigena Pilgrim Identifier

As Tim mentioned, I got a nice patch and credential from the CPR. I sewed the patch on and the few pilgrims I saw were jealous

    Arrivederci Valle D'Aosta

For anyone looking for an update on St Bernard’s pass. I’m in Orsieres tonight and they called the monks in the pass and they said the pass wouldn’t open until June 3. They have high snow walls along the road to the pass that are still unstable and are dangerous to pass. They also said the...

    Inclement Weather

I’m in Tomar on the Portugues and the problem isn’t cold but rain. Had to take the day off to dry my boots. The roads and trails can’t handle the sudden downpours. My understanding is that it is a different system off the Azores causing weather issues here. Hopefully tomorrow is last bad day.

Walking poles in Le Puy? -- last minute question

If you are going to Lyon to get to Le Puy, I bought my poles at Au Vieux Campuer in Lyon. They had a large selection.
