    Camino Options

I have not yet walked from Geneva. I LOVE the LePuy route. Some of my favorite things are starting my journey at the cathedral in Le Puy after the morning mass, and walking into SJPdP, ending with mass in the cathedral. Those beginning and end points were very special and memorable for me...

    Finisterre or Muxia?

I know you’ve asked for a preference between the two, but I’m strongly in the “AND” camp. Finisterre was a great place to celebrate for a day, then a lovely walk to Muxia where there was so much space for contemplation. Enjoy your mother/daughter time. ~buen camino

Rethinking my CF-ish route after Burgos (and I start in 7 days!)

Dear Rhys, look what you started ! lol I also loved the meseta. It was in Sept (and hot) but I would never skip it… especially in spring. I hear there are many wildflowers but I haven’t experienced it myself. And I’d never skip Burgos. You don’t have to stay in the center if you want to skip...

    Advice for Restaurant Dinners

Consider referring to the Michelin guide -- I believe there are some along the Le Puy. I don't recall a bad meal along that route.

    Hostels in Porto

Booking lists most of the private hostels discussed here — even if you prefer to book using other methods, it’s great for reference. Porto is FULL of hostels with varying price points. Gallery Hostel is great, as is Porto Spot Hostel. I think they both have their own websites.

Reviews: Stiff rocker-style shoes that come in women's extra wide

Excellent— my feet are becoming quite sensitive and your description of your feet rings true to me. Thank you for sharing 😊

    New lightweight backpack from REI

I purchased an REI Flash 45 about 7 years ago, it’s my lightest pack, with less accouterments but a reasonably comfortable pack and I’ve used it several times. It only has a top opening to save zipper weight (not my preferred design), it’s a light gray (which shows ALL the dirt), but I’ve been...

Ideas please on where to start further back in France, before SJPP

Whilst walking the Le Puy route, I met several who walked from Saint Palais and joined the Le Puy route into SJPdP. I walked the Baztan (Bayonne to Pamplona, therefore not going thru SJPdP — lovely option. I was the only pilgrim — walked thru some sweet towns with great ambience and food, and...

    Deciding among a few Caminos

Le Puy route is fantastic— but Cahors might be a stretch (definitely too fast for me, but I prefer to limit myself to 20 kms per day). Figeac or Rocamadour is definitely a reasonable option. Le Puy is a route best savored. :) The other routes are on my short list to-do, but have no experience...

Struggling with 1/2 size larger - Lone Peaks - insole recs?

I also used Superfeet (Berry) in two Altra LP caminos (5+ years ago). I did buy the .5 size bigger, with the superfeet I found them quite comfy. Definitely allowing a bit of room for swelling /spreading is beneficial. My walking partner started having rubbing/blister issues with her Hokas 3+...

    Electrolytes

For those recommending water, I always drank significant amounts but this can also lead to needing electrolytes. Each time I stopped by a pharmacy and described my symptoms, they frequently suggested electrolytes. I’ve carried tablets, but I’ve found eating several pieces of fresh fruit a day...

    Starting in Lisbon

I also want to testify to the hot hot days in early September, and there is little to no shade and heat reflected off the cement, dry earth, and river. It IS walkable, but plan your days accordingly noting there are not a lot of places to get water or sit down along the route. I also noted quite...

    Scrubba

…. Me too. It’s useful if the albergue you’re in is particularly busy or the facilities are in poor shape. Or if you’re not in an albergue. Or on a less-frequented Camino. The dry bag method is a decent alternative —both are good for giving your clothes a good soak. But the extra cost isn’t...

    Lisbon to Porto: Jan 2024

Walked this Camino in 2022 — The Wise app had a solid list of albergues. It also provides ‘off Camino’ routing options to get you off high-speed main roadways when necessary. From Lisbon to Tomar there is a lot of road walking and the paths are often paved as well. But the walk can be charming...

    Wise Pilgrim app

I use several resources on my walks, but I always have Wise and Gronze as my informational back-ups. What I specifically liked about using the Wise app along the route between Lisbon and Porto is that he included some off-route recommendations for walking -- sometimes on safer backroads away...
