My Newish Sandals of a Very Well Known Brand Are Slippery in The Wet

Had the same slippery experience with Keen fisherman sandals. Who would have thought a sandal with fisherman name wouldn’t grip wet rocks? My solution was to switch to ECCO brand sandals. Great grip and excellent arch support. Also you might look at any shoes with Vibram soles. They make many...

    Which poncho?

Have used my Packa on 5 Caminos. Best feature is the ability to clamp it around your pack to carry it and then able to slip it on or off while you're walking. Great for those days with intermittent rain showers. Doesn't fly out with high winds and has excellent ventilation for warm rain. Only...

    Lightweight Tent Recommendations

We are talking about the Camino here. Few bugs so a bug barrier isn't needed and temperate climate. The tarp is for rain, some protection from the wind (but will flap a lot more than a tent would).

    Lightweight Tent Recommendations

For lightweight, small size for carrying, and inexpensive it's hard to beat a tarp. Telescopic hiking poles make great supports and about 8 small, T cross section, aluminum pegs like those sold by MSR and 30' of parachute cord gives you lots of flexibility to pitch the tarp lots of different...

Haglund's Deformity/lump on back of heel

Due to enormous heal spurs I can only wear sandals year round. Have twice walked from SJPDP to Santiago and last fall from Le Puy en Velay to SJPDP. First used Keen Newports with wool socks but found the Keen soles don't grip wet rocks very well so switched to ECCO sandals. Also use Sealskinz in...

    Sarong or quick dry towel?

I migrated to a piece of thin linen that I bought at a fabric store as my towel. Really soaks up water instead of pushing it around, dries quickly and is light and packs small.

Where to find a gpx track from Le Puy to SJPDP?

Thank you Jill. I downloaded the track and waypoint files and installed them on my iPhone gps app without any issues. Now if only an electronic form of Miam Miam a DoDo becomes available I'll have minimum weight.

Where to find a gpx track from Le Puy to SJPDP?

Tried the forum search function but it says 'gpx' is too short a search term. Tried google and did find a bicycle route. Also segments of the route but not all the distance. Hoping somebody can point me to a good track. Also a waypoint file would be nice.

    Rain Gear

If it's cool, full rain gear is needed to avoid hypothermia. Started at SJPDP mid April last year. It was cool and rainy the first several weeks. Only one entire day of heavy wind driven rain but short showers on many days. I loved my Packa, which is a cross between a poncho and a parka. Doesn't...

    Best Apps for Camino Frances?

I walked from SJPDP starting in Mid April using only my iPhone 6, no printed guides. I had eCamino, Wise Pilgrim Guide, Gerald Kelley's Camino guide and Google Translate. Used them all as each has strengths and weaknesses but I used Kelley's the most. Bought a Movistar sim in Pampalona that had...

Need Help With Rectangular Sleeping Bag

Take a look at the Sea To Summit Traveler 50F down bag. Sold by REI as well as other outlets. It is accurately temperature rated and packs really small due to the down filling. Weighs about 12oz if my memory is correct. Unzips to a rectangular comforter or zips to be a fairly roomy mummy bag so...

Booking accommodation along the Camino Frances

I finished the CF today, starting in SJPDP. Was in Burgos over May Day when a crowd of Europeans took advantage of the 3 day weekend and started their Caminos. Seemed like the number of pilgrims around me doubled. I panicked and reserved Albergues for the first few nights but then relaxed and...

Comparing Brierley and yellow German guide now in English

Downloaded the Kindle version last night onto my iPhone. Hoping that any updated versions will be gratis for a reasonable time from original purchase. Say two years?? Leaving SJPDP on April 17. Will give the book a good test.

Bed Bug Protector Sheet. Effective? Availability?

Anniesantiago: Never thought about the danger of bottom bunks. Thanks for the tip. Guess I'll be climbing up each night! Love your idea of using a sheer curtain. Great alternative to using silk. JoJo: I arrive at SJPDP on 16 April. My sleeping bag is a Sea to Summit Traveler down bag. 10C...
