Weirdest/Strangest item someone has taken on the Camino

I think the pilgrim from Argentina that took a cobblestone from Paris to drop at the Cruz de Ferro. I don't know why ... maybe he thought he had a lot of sins?

    Back to the Camino

about the weight you carry - I would suggest to think carefully about what is essential rather than set an arbitrary weigh saving. A third pair of socks, the sleeping bag, or a second water battle can mean the difference between completing the Camino and falling short because of blisters...

    Photography equipment?..

I've done three full Caminos and lugged a full frame SLR with 28-300mm lens with me in each one. Security is the main thing. Put it all in a bag and take it into the showers with you. At night, place it at the bottom of your sleeping bag so it cannot be accessed while you sleep

Alas, they do not mail them to Australia

    Alert Wildfires in Portugal

Aussie here. THAT was really dumb. Stay away from the fire ground and the immediate area. Fires can reignite and leave you stranded. The radiant heat from the ground and smouldering plant life is not to be underestimated. Plan your route around. Take a bus if you have to. No Compostela is...

    Alert Forest fires in Spain

Is there an app that tracks current fires in Spain? I am looking for something like what is available for Portugal (Fogos.pt)

Camino Frances May 2017 will it be a race for a bed?

I'm currently in Fromista and it's becoming depressingly necessary to make bookings to secure a bed for the following day. I would expect May to get worse.

Why you should not walk the Camino del Norte (or at least not until you have read this post!)

I walked the Camino del Norte from Irún to Santiago during September, October 2015. This was my second Camino, having walked the Camino Frances from SJPdP to Santiago in 2013. Like many others, my choice to walk a different Camino was made on the basis of seeing a different side of Spain on a...

The Camino as background to a crime show "Crossing Lines"

Last night I was catching up with shows on Netflix, in particular "Crossing Lines" about a crime-solving team from the International Court of Justice (ICC). Quite good, worth watching. This episode revolved around a series of unexplained murders by drowning, in which a shell had been found...

El Niño weather on the Camino del Norte

There are two predominant suggestions. The first, that local conditions dwarf the effect of El Nino; whilst the second is that it should lead to milder, wetter winters in Southern Europe and the Mediterranean. I am starting from Irun on 10 September. I am packing good raingear. :-) Alex

Camino del Norte Mid September 2015

OK - got my plane tickets. I am starting from Irun on 10 September and following the Norte all the way to Compostella (and Fisterra afterwards). I am a photographer and speak Spanish fluently. Look forward to catching up!

    We are Wimps!

OK ~ I've done my time in the Australian Army and carried way-too-much weight (and an M60 machine gun of 11Kg). I have walked the Overland Trail with 25Kg of pack .. and done the Camino Frances with 14Kg. It's always been the case that you carry as little as you can to do the job that you...

Live from the Norte... feels like paradise
