European Peace Walk - Travelling to/from Vienna/Trieste

European Peace Walk 2015

At the very last minute, I jumped. I'm registered for EPW, start date 25 August and I'm thrilled !!! But now for the details .....

Coming from Canada, I'm looking for the most economical way to get to Vienna. Direct to Vienna is quite expensive - my preliminary research suggests either flying into Munich or Prague and taking the train to Vienna. Any thoughts or suggestions from anyone? Ease of travel in/around Munich or Prague? Other routes? (my language skills are English, Dutch and a smattering of French)

Research for my return suggests local EU flight Trieste to London and then flying home. I'm open to any other route if more experienced travellers have suggestions.

According to www.hipmunk.com your best bet is Air Canada into and out of Frankfurt, and then Austrian Air from Frankfurt into Vienna. Coming back you might want to take train into Venice or other larger city before taking a hop back to Frankfurt.

Let us know how you get on!

Expedia is a good tool for finding flights on the overseas leg. There are a number of discount airlines in Europe that don't depend on getting a return flight.

Probably the cheapest way is Return Toronto to London Heathrow with Air Canada. Then Easy Jet from London Gatwick to Vienna.

You'd save on the transfer between airports if you can get a flight to Gatwick. Transat might still fly into Gatwick.

All of the London airports are connected to greater London by bus and train.

Remember to allow lots of time for arrival delays, check-in, customs, and security when you transfer between airports to catch ongoing flights.

There is a bus service between airports operated by National Express.

Wow, thanks for the feedback. I had never heard of hipmunk so I'll add it to my list of resources. And the London Gatwick return with Air Transat is a great idea. I was thinking one-way both directions but the overseas return with one way EU flights is much better.

Thanks again, both of you. I'll post the results after I've booked next week.

One more thing:

I would book an open jaws ticket: Toronto to Vienna and Trieste to Toronto.

Getting from Trieste to Vienna is a challenge by train and flying back from Trieste to Vienna is probably impossible.

That said if you have the time, then by all means train back to Vienna from Trieste - it is great two day trip via Italy and Slovenia. Plan a a few stops along the way

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

So I've finally booked what seems to be the easiest and most affodable option for me ... direct flight Montreal to Venice return with Air Transat. An overnight train from Venice to Vienna and then 2 nights in Vienna to rest up before I start my walk.

Now I just have to hope I added enough days to allow for stops along the walk.

Thanks for the advice folks :)

Sounds like a great trip, I'm contemplating to do this walk as well. I take it that we will have to fine a greeting as we do for the Camino Frances, in the interm I will say Buen Camino...

Munich's airport is very highly rated and I like it very much. Munich's Rathaus is gobsmacked gorgeous. The metro system is easy to use and getting from the airport in is easy - takes about 35 minutes by train and tickets can be bought at a kiosk. Not hard to get to the train station (Hauptbahnhof) at all. If you need a hotel recommendation, let me know. Just learn the few basic words you'll need to get fed and take a good citymap. The hotel staff usually speak a fair amount of English, but not so much outside of them. I was surprised to not run across French speakers there, even closer to the French border later on in that trip.

Best wishes for a wonderful Peace Walk and what an adorable icon picture!
