Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Hi all, I'll be leaving St Jean on August 31st. Hope to see some of you out there!

booked at Orisson for the night of Sept. 18
Hi KLynn Finally after 5 e-mails I have had a reply from Jean-Jacques and managed to change my date to the 18th!!! So I will see you in Orisson if not before. Have no idea why he gave me the 19th, I guess I shouldn't really have paid up till I got the correct date? Was desperate for a bed? I know September gets very busy, very excited now.

Hello Sarah,
Good news indeed! Looking forward to meeting you. I am gradually working through all the outstanding decisions yet to be made ....rain jacket & pants vs poncho, hiking boot vs shoe, sleeping bag or not( the silk liner at MEC seems too expensive!) , do I need a converter for my Iphone or just an adapter. Wow! I sure all will come together eventually. Cheers and Buen Camino, Lynn

Hello Rachel , I find it great that you walk with your dad . Walking to the alberque Orisson is nice , I did it to this year . You will have the evening meal together and everybody will introduce himself . It was a very
nice evening like this .
Wish you and your dad all the best and a Buen Camino , Peter .

Hello Denis and wife! Caroline of Express Bourricot collects two people at airport -- maybe you? -- just before me at the Bayonne train station ~ 5:30 pm. I look forward to meeting you both, there or in St. Jean or while walking. I apologize in advance for any silly effects of my jet/train-lag from west coast USA to Paris to Bayonne!
Hello, we are hoping to get the bus directly from Biarritz airport at lunchtime on 27/8 to St Jean. Hope to see you there. My wife's is Bernie.

I will be taking Poncho, no rain pants, on the 1st part of my camino I had hardly any rain. I'm 'only' going for 2 weeks though. i can guarantee you will have rain in Galicia.
Shoes for me I found my boots were overkill, too hot and sorely envied those in shoes, used shoes second time, boots if you have dodgy ankles though? I take an adapter that lets 4 people charge at once. Still haven't decided between silk liner or sleeping bag. Nursing a sore shoulder and want to be as light as possible. I guess I answered my own question?

Hi Sarah,
I am still thinking of a rain jacket & pants...mostly because I saw a beautiful rain jacket with zipped pockets and underarm vents at MEC this week, it looked so comfortable .....I will be on the camino for 7 weeks. Still debating new shoes or my Merrell boots I bought a couple of years ago for the Bruce Trail hike. They are not water resistant though... but there probably is a good waterproofing spray that I could use if I stick with them. The sales rep at MEC recommended a boot...hmmm, I wonder if he is on commission? My ankles are OK and I will be taking hiking poles so perhaps shoes will be fine. Thanks for your comments...I will give shoes some more thought. Also thinking of going to see a podiatrist to have my feet assessed. I think they are OK but would benefit from some professional opinion.
I like your idea of the adapter for 4....since I will be walking with 2 others.
I can borrow a light sleeping bag .... will take it as long as the final weight of my pack is comfortable.
Cheers for now,
Buen camino,
Lynn

My husband and I will be starting our Camino the first week of September. Still working on exact date. Plan to start SJPDP, overnight in Orrison, and head for Finesterre, taking each day as it comes. We both retired a year ago and delightfully discovered the gift of time. We are thrilled to approach this trek without a rigid end date.
Bought plane tickets this week, it's getting more real, and the excitement level is high. Lots of unknowns, but we are up to the challenge of figuring it out. Brierley, lightweight backpacks, hiking boots and wool socks are at the ready!
Has anyone traveled from the U.S. with hiking poles? We are hearing they must be checked inside bags, not in a carry-on. I will check with our carrier (Icelandic Air). Just wondering if anyone had experience or knowledge.

HI Mamasong
Will put you down for 5th September in very popular group, I can easily change when you know for sure. You may have to work around your Orisson date as it's a very sought after place with limited spaces.
The hiking pole debate goes on and on,getting them to Spain may not be a problem but getting them home could be? I'm told the airport staff in Santiago and other airports eg. Madrid will confiscate them? I always check my pack and my travelling poles go inside. Hope this helps?
Wishing you a wonderful camino, feel free to ask questions.
Buen camino

Hello Sarah

This is my first attempt to reply - hope this goes through.
Thanks for taking the initiative on the September departures. I see we are both leaving SJPdP on 18 September. Would you have the opportunity for coffee/cerveza on the 17th? If so, name a place and time.

Hi Sunam, of course we can meet, that's the whole idea of the thread to put people in touch with each other. I have been 'talking' to Ethel and we are both staying in Gite Ultreia. I am getting picked up at the airport at 17.30 not sure if we need to wait for other flights to get in? I would hope to be able to meet at my albergue at 19.30? Easy to find on the main route. Where are you coming from? and staying?

I'm getting REALLY excited now!

Curious, I know there is an established meeting spot in Santiago de Compostela, but I have not heard of one established in Saint Jean Pied de Port. There are many pilgrims that will be in SJPdP all around the same time, it might be nice for a common gathering spot for those that have the inkling and energy.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

This is a cafe/ bar on the main road that is parallel to the main 'Pilgrim street where the office is, many pilgrims seem to make their way here, sorry I can't quite make out or remember the name of it?
If you make an exact time everyone could find the Pilgrim's office and then find a cafe or bar?

Congratulations on your retirement! I really like Icelandair and hope you can take advantage of their stopover option. There's a nice Inn in Grindavik (closeby) that will pick you up at the international airport in Keflavik and take you back. It's called the Northern Light Inn and from there it's a very easy walk to the Blue Lagoon. If you want a floating massage at the Blue Lagoon, book early, though! The Innkeeper is lovely and it's like being in the coziest of places in the middle of a frozen tundra (we were there in December).

Lydia, I leave SJPdP September 7th too. See you on the trail!

Oh, I see your are from Redwood City, I'm originally from San Leandro. Buen Camino!

I am starting my walk on Sept 7th, and wanted to know if there is a pilgrim blessing mass on Sunday Sept 6th in St. Jean?
Yes I'm sure there will be Lydia, just not sure of the time? They will tell you at the Pilgrim's office or your Albergue or hotel will know.
The Mass at Roncesvalles is very special too be sure not to miss it. Lovely Pilgrim blessing.

I got mine and hope to get it sewn on my backpack (green Talon 22) this weekend. I will definitely be looking for patches along the way!

Well, this is exciting for you all! Just to let you know that I will be on Camino from the beginning of September, offering first aid as usual. (possibly initially getting over a hangover after seeing Saint Mike off on his bicycle Camino ;)).

Will be on the Roncesvalles/Pamplona section from September 2nd and then working west to the Meseta.

This year there will be two of us as I am really pleased to say that I am being joined by veteran pilgrim and hospitelaro, Jenny H, from Australia, who is also trained in first aid (will be so good to have someone to laugh with when one of you screams or whimpers on seeing the tools of our trade! :);))

Mainly based at Castrojeriz but don't be surprised if we appear anywhere from Roncesvalles onwards!

I will be putting up a specific post before leaving - the deal is this - as well as the first aid and pastoral care - if you get stuck, really need help, and we can get to you (we will have a car with us) we will come. Will be checking forum mails regularly so all you would need to do is to send me a pm with location and phone details. (If it is Mad mileage from us we might ask for a fuel donation).

Buen Camino!!

Hi, David! I hope to leave from SJPDP around the same time as you are, but have yet to make a firm commitment. I'd like to communicate with your group because I'm a first-timer, in my early 70s. Not looking to lean on anyone but would like connections to several people on the trail at the same time as I am. Please let me know if there is anyone walking with you with whom I may correspond. Thank you, Eleanor L.

Thanks Sarah!
Hope to meet up with you on the way.
FYI: I'm 68, and very fit (training by climbing high altitude mts. in Calif.)........BUT..... I still made a promise to my friends and family...."listen to your body". If it says "slow down" or "enough for today ".....then that's what I will do. I'd rather walk at a slower pace and enjoy my surroundings. The Camino is not a competition race. If I make it in 35 days instead of 30, then so be it.

By the way, last August I was touring Spain by myself for 4 weeks. After my tour of Northern, Central and Southern Spain ended, I only had 3 days left before flying home, so I flew up to Santiago and took a bus from Santiago to Azura...then I walked back to to Santiago (25 miles). It took me two days to do it.
The way I saw it, I was a "mini pilgrim".
When I arrived in the main plaza on day two, and saw all the pilgrims there, some jumping with joy that they "made it", and some crying their eyes out that they actually finished, and that their long journey had finally come to an end, I knew that I had to come back and walk the whole Camino. So..... here I am, one year later, training like mad. I keep hearing horror stories about crossing the Pyrenees, so I'm trying to get prepared.
Anyway, sorry fo the long post.
I'm sure we'll meet up somewhere on the Way.
(Camino Frances...starting on Sept. 4th....SJPDP to Santiago....and hopefully to Finistere).

Hi, Donna,

I'm 72 and hoping to start from SJPDP around the same time as you are. I am training but not nearly so,vigorously as you, so I doubt I'd be able to match your pace! But I'm hoping to connect with as many people as possible, who will be on the trail at the same time, for camaraderie, support, and security, frankly. Anyway I'd like to hear from you. I'll be starting from Boston area but haven't made travel arrangements. Sounds like, if I want to stay at Orisson, I better decide fast! Godspeed and Buon Camino!

Hola Pilgrims! You may see another thread by Deadfred? his is 2016, I am going to start a list for this year please let me know if you would like to be added. It was a great thread last year, you could see the other names around you and I did meet some pilgrims on the Camino that I 'met' here.
Just let me have your name and, date and start place and I will add. Please note this is for Camino Frances.
Thanks and BUEN CAMINO!!!

Hi and welcome to the forum Eleanor! I will add your name to the big group starting the 5th of September, I can easily change the date once you firm up the date. The first week in September is going to be very busy, don't forget there are MANY pilgrims walking that are not on this forum. If you decide to stay at Orisson you need to book very soon it has been taking at least a week for many pilgrims to get a reply from there as they do not use a conventional booking system.

I was giving advice to one of the other pilgrims re the end of august and she was having some trouble finding accommodation in St Jean. Perhaps the later the better?
If you want to contact anyone in particular you just click on their name/profile and go to 'start a conversation' I'm not sure that all of the pilgrims are monitoring this thread all the time. I do of course and will offer all the help I can and answer any questions if I am able. :)

May I be the first to wish you a BUEN CAMINO
Sarah

Hi, I decided to send an e-mail and see if I can move my date forward? I tried ringing and was told I must e-mail, so I have tried. I know it will be a few days before I get a reply but I'm hopeful.

Hi Sarah, I'm putting this out because I couldn't find current postings in the 'Poles' thread. They were quite old, so thanks for reading this. I've been training for a couple of months now and yesterday took a pair of walking poles (bought cheap on line just for training here) and walked for 7 hrs, just to see what the poles felt like AND if I could do that many hours. I did fine, but was ready for a steak and a bottle of wine afterwards…. and I don't eat red meat! I do feel the poles definitely give some support, but what drove me absolutely nuts was the sound. Half way through, I stopped using them, but did start up again with them because I could feel the difference. I am one who loves quiet time, so I know I need to get used to the sound, not only of mine, but throngs of others. I will follow through and purchase my new poles in St. Jean, along with a rain poncho.

Hi Maggie, glad to hear you are training with poles, the more the better and you will get used to them. They are really invaluable when you are coming downhill have saved many a pilgrim from falling. The noise you do get used to by sheer repetition but rubber tips are the way to go and I always carry spares. There is no rule that says you have to use your poles ALL the time, many poles collapse and can be strapped to your pack,by the time you get to the meseta you can walk for whole days without them.

Good on you for getting in up to 7 hours walking, I really must apply myself, nursing a shoulder injury so not able to use poles at all at the moment. I must admit once you are used to them it feels weird without!

Keep up the good work :)
Sarah

Hi Sarah, please add me to your list. I'll be leaving from St Jean on Sept. 16. It's a long flight and I'm 79, so I have arranged to ease into this by staying overnight at Corazon Puro (in Bizkarreta) then walking from SJPdP to Orisson the first day.

Hi Sarah,
I am really enjoying reading this forum. Thanks for setting it up! I have actual dates now for our trip and wanted to put out a few plans to see if anyone has any feedback on the logistics of it all. First, I (we) will be arriving in Barcelona on Sept. 11th. Hopefully we will take the train to Pamplona and are considering staying at Corazon Puro for the night, which someone mentioned in another forum. Then the next day, we would find our way to SJ....most likely beginning the walk on Sept. 14, depending on a pending Orisson reservation. I think you tentatively had me listed as leaving on the 15th. If anyone has any experience/advice on going from Barcelona to Pamplona, or the stay at Corazon Puro, it would be welcomed!

Hi Bob! I will add you right away, I walked last year with a beautiful Kiwi lady who was 79 and left me standing! I guess New Zealanders do a lot of hiking? Perfect country for it? Age means nothing on the camino as long as you listen to your own body and don't force yourself to keep up with anyone else. I would happily let Elisabeth get way ahead of me and eventually catch up at the next cafe stop.
Buen camino

Hi kcs9, it's no problem to change your date and hopefully you will hear from them soon, don't be afraid to send a couple of extra prompting e-mails to back up you application, I had to do this.

I'm afraid I don't know about Corazon Puro as I come from the UK via Biarritz. But I can assure you that I have heard and seen only great things about them on the Forum, everyone seems to get a warm welcome and the best service, they truly seem to understand what pilgrims need.
Sorry also no experience with trains myself only buses.

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
Hi Sarah,
I am still thinking of a rain jacket & pants...mostly because I saw a beautiful rain jacket with zipped pockets and underarm vents at MEC this week, it looked so comfortable .....I will be on the camino for 7 weeks.
Cheers for now,
Buen camino,
Lynn
Hi Lynn I am in Toronto, and go to MEC when are you starting and from where, Aliwalks

Thanks Sarah….I guess I already knew that I eventually would get used to them, but even with the rubber tips on 'clickty clickety'. It may just these poles also. I'm still new and perhaps setting them down too hard; I also notice my left arm flailing a bit. Oh to be ambidextrous. I often wonder if I should take a rest day here, i.e. like after 7 hour walk. But I won't be doing that much on the Camino, so guess I answered my own question:>)
Appreciate your support.

I'm your age Bob (until Nov 2) and am doing the same thing; overnighting at Corazon Puro; also walking St. Jean to Orisson, so you should be well ahead of me. I don't start until Sept 25. Buen Camino….

Hi all, I'll be leaving St Jean on August 31st. Hope to see some of you out there!
Hi! I may be as well. My daughter and I will be landing in Madrid on August 30 and not sure if we will be able to matriculate through spain to SJPDP in time to leave on August 31 or September 1. Either way we will start one of those days. We will be traveling to Finisterre in about 33 days total. 30 to SDC and then 3 to the sea.
Buen Camino!

Hi Lynn I am in Toronto, and go to MEC when are you starting and from where, Aliwalks
Hello Aliwalks,
I leave Toronto on Air France to Paris on Sept 15th. Will stay one night in Bayonne and start the walk from SJPDP on the 18th. I have been into MEC in Barrie this week looking for a new backpack and a few other things.(keeping away from Toronto with the Pan Am games being on) I was surprised to find what seems like an excellent Woods brand backpack(30L) in Canadian Tire for a very reasonable price. I am giving it some thought.
When are you starting your camino?
Lynn

Hi Sunam, of course we can meet, that's the whole idea of the thread to put people in touch with each other. I have been 'talking' to Ethel and we are both staying in Gite Ultreia. I am getting picked up at the airport at 17.30 not sure if we need to wait for other flights to get in? I would hope to be able to meet at my albergue at 19.30? Easy to find on the main route. Where are you coming from? and staying?

I'm getting REALLY excited now!

Hi Sarah

I'm arriving in SJPdP at 1924 on 16 September via bus from Cambo Les Bains. Are you arriving on 17 September? If so I could meet at your albergue around 1930 that evening.

Many thanks

Mike

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Hi Lynn,
I am flying Toronto to Biarritz a month later. Out of curiosity, I just searched on the Canadian Tire website about the Woods backpack. The only 30 L one I saw was the Aerator. It is a nice looking daypack but it did not have a hip strap, which I think is important for your comfort unless your pack is going to weigh well under 5 kg! Another thing to consider is how much the pack itself weighs. I use the Osprey Talon 33 - the Smaller size is 31 L.

Yes Mike, I'm arriving the 17th and should be there by 19.00 so 19.30 is fine. If i'm not there ask for Ethel she is going to be coming from the US and will arrive before me and I will be along shortly. Hope I don't have any delays.

You're welcome, I'm looking forward to meeting as many Forum members as possible.

How lovely to be travelling with your daughter. My son was 5 months ahead of me, very handy having a camino 'expert' in the family when it came to packing and accommodation tips! :p:D

Oh, I see your are from Redwood City, I'm originally from San Leandro. Buen Camino!
Hi Mike,
If you are in town before the 7th, which hotel/hostel are you planning to stay at? And maybe we can meet Sunday night. I have another gal from Santa Clara who is starting the walk with me on the 7th as well. See you in St Jean. I am so excited and can't wait.

Hello C clearly, You are right. I have seen several backpacks that have features that I like however they don't have that nice wide hip strap. I did try on an Osprey...Sirrus, 26 L. Didn't have any assistance for feedback on the fit. Hmmm

Hi Sarah and Sunam,
Janis, Bonnie and I would also like to meet you also. Unlikely that we could meet you at 19:30. We are staying at Albergue Beilari and I believe dinner is at 19:30 pm. If you are around a little earlier perhaps we could meet for a coffee or beer? I don't have the Forum badge yet and not sure how to go about getting one. Cheers, Lynn

Hi Lynn,
I will be leaving Biarritz airport about 17.30 if plane is on time, should get to St Jean by ?18.30 I am at Gite Ultreia just a minute down the street. Will try to come and find you if you don't find me? I will go to the Pilgrim office at some point which is opposite Beilari.

If you want a Forum badge you can get them in Ivar's shop on the Forum they are with the camino guides and if you wish you can get credentials there too?

Hello Aliwalks,
I leave Toronto on Air France to Paris on Sept 15th. Will stay one night in Bayonne and start the walk from SJPDP on the 18th. I have been into MEC in Barrie this week looking for a new backpack and a few other things.(keeping away from Toronto with the Pan Am games being on) I was surprised to find what seems like an excellent Woods brand backpack(30L) in Canadian Tire for a very reasonable price. I am giving it some thought.
When are you starting your camino?
Lynn

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
Looks like my camino is on hold. My dad has a very dodgy knee, can't walk on it. He sees a specialist in 2 weeks, but it's looking very unlikely. And I'd just bought some nice walking socks too!

Hello everyone! :) I am from Norway and will be walking my first Camino alone, and I think I will start September the 3rd from SJPDP. Looking forward to it - and to meet great people!
Hello and welcome, September is a great month to walk the Camino according my wife. She walked from Sjpdp to Santiago in 2013. I wish you well and a Buen Camino, Peter.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

Welcome Tom and Buen Camino!

Looks like my camino is on hold. My dad has a very dodgy knee, can't walk on it. He sees a specialist in 2 weeks, but it's looking very unlikely. And I'd just bought some nice walking socks too!
Just a little delay, I hope, Rachel. Good that he didn't develop a bad knee after getting all the way to Spain!

Don't worry it will be there when your dad is ok to walk it, he must be ok as I and others have suffered before on the walk but you will get there.

Hi and welcome Tom. Feel free to ask questions and/or contact others around your start date. Not sure if all of the August Forum members have noticed this thread but I will add any that wish to be added.

So sorry to hear this Rachel, UNLIKE! The camino will wait for you though, it's been around for a long time and I think will always be there. My mum says 'everything is meant for a reason' perhaps this is just not the right time for you and your dad? Hope his knee is better soon and when you eventually get to walk it will be extra special.

Best wishes to you both
