Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!
When I get asked by prospective pilgrims here in Adelaide about where they should be training, especially if they have limited travel time, I always respond with out from your front door. After all it worked for Bilbo Baggins.

So much of my training was just incorporating daily tasks like shopping and getting the weekend papers - oh! and the opportunity to train for those essential café con leche stops.

So here's a weekend walk to the local hardware store along the shared trail adjacent to a major expressway. Perfect training for that next Camino.

and... my very first long walk >20kms with full pack since recovering from my navicular foot fracture... excuse me if I'm a little bit excited! :D

Once again, out from my front door and along the wonderful neighbourhood parks and reserves and the Tom Roberts Horse Trail. There were lots of eucalypt trees, rows of pruned grapevines, sheep and cattle in paddocks, a mix of paved roads, tracks, rocky trails and mud... just like on the Camino ;)

Saw some pilgrims early in the morning.

Interesting (fun!) walk to and along the paths through Wacky Woods near Fanny Bay on Vancouver Island. Artist George Sawchuck created sculptures from found objects and placed them in these 4 acres of woods over an almost 40 year period from about 1974. He died recently so there aren't any new pieces now. The new owners of the property allow people to continue to walk through and explore but eventually the works will all sink back into the forest.

I have trouble getting things the way I want them too but I found a way to do it. You keep repeating this until it looks good enough. First you post. Then:

1) Indicate that you want to edit your post. At the bottom of your post to the left of the blue buttons you will see the hyperlinked text "Edit". Click it.

2) Now edit your post. Your pictures will appear as text like: (ATTACH)28937(/ATTACH) (but with square brackets instead.) Move these around the text of your post to get them in the right place. Experiment with putting them all on one line, one attach statement per line, etc. You may have to switch between editing in the RICH TEXT format and the BB CODE format (click the right-most icon, the wrench/spanner). Click the POST REPLY button.

3) Look at what you've got and repeat from 1. Except to remove the thumbnails that have the name of the files to the right of the thumbnails you click the MORE OPTIONS button. Then you will be into another version of the editor. At the bottom you will see your thumbnails and buttons to indicate whether you want to include the picture as THUMBNAIL, FULL IMAGE or to DELETE it. Then click REPLY TO THREAD.

4) Look at your post and repeat steps where needed.

I'm no expert. I just keep trying to get what I want by repeating the steps above.

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
We've had a bit of rain here in South Australia - yet another of those once in 100 year events....

Well, my favourite Onkaparinga River National Park used to have a lovely swing bridge constructed in 1994:
footbridge_ornp.jpg
and then on Wednesday this week we had 70 mm of rain in the catchment combined with a release from the full reservoir upstream... by Thursday morning the combined floodwaters reached the bridge...

Wow that's a lot of water! What a shame for that bridge...:(
Yes, it was sad to see it gone. The floodwaters peaked at 4:00am and the bridge held on for a few more hours until the force of the water pulled the cement and posts out of the banks.

The greater shame was that several houses were flooded when the water rose rapidly in less than half an hour. One of the unfortunate consequences of living near the end of a river's journey to the sea.

Walking across the suspension bridge over the Columbia River to the trail through the forest and around Zuckerberg Island near Castlegar B.C. A beautiful, special place.

Peg and I just got back from an overnight backpacking trip to some lakes in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. It wasn't very far in distance but it did take us awhile. The campsite was at the outlet of the bigger lake and there was a good view. In the morning we had a moose patrolling the far shore of the lake.

Another park in my backyard... Hallett Cove Conservation Park has it all - geological and archaeological sites of worldwide significance, aboriginal history and artefacts, fabulous coastline and views and lots of stairs and hills for that all important Camino training... oh! and a kiosk for the well earned after walk ice-cream! All within 25kms of the city of Adelaide.

I did a nice walk around Bat-Bentheim in Germany.
Wish everyone well, Peter.

Today was not a beautiful walk in terms of views but it was a walk for a good cause. 24 hours walking in the Fight against Cancer. Around 75 groups gathered for walking/ running continously for 24 hours. I walked with a workmate this morning for an hour and also an hour this afternoon. Total of 11 k.
The event is on the grounds / barracks of the local Army base. Lots of people, even with the cold and windy weather. When cheering for the others we could rest in our tent.

Drove to neighbouring country the Netherlands where I walked at Mount St Peter. I think the highest point of Netherlands.
Bit of everything : woods, tarmac, caves and the water not far away either.
Grey during whole walk and now at the cafe finally sun.

A selection of Camino Jewellery
Two days ago Peg and I walked with our dog for about 10 km in the vicinity of Walden Pond. Just in the vicinity though as dogs are not welcome there. Autumn temperatures and a cloudless blue sky, which we didn't see much of because most of the walk was in the woods with deep shade. There are many trails in the area.

More of a stroll than a walk in between appointments in Adelaide. I took the opportunity to walk down to the South Parklands where there is a softly spoken hidden gem - the Adelaide Himeji Garden. Himeji is one of our sister cities and is located 650 km west of Tokyo and 8,050 km from Adelaide. The garden symbolises the bonds of friendship and was a tranquil pause in a busy day to reflect upon all our Camino friendships that endure still.

A few days break near Shaftesbury (Dorset) and a walk up Hambledon Hill. Very steep ascent, then along the ridge to the hill fort before returning by the more gentle slope downhill. Great views from the top.

I'm cheating here because these walks were far from local. In fact they were on the other side of the world from me but they are non-camino and local to forum members from New Zealand.

The first thing we did on our trip once settled into Auckland, NZ was to walk through the town to Mt. Eden. Peg and I had been to the exact antipode of this spot on our first trip to Spain over 25 years ago so I could say I had been on the exact opposite sides of the earth (I had been to NZ and Mt. Eden decades before.) Now Peg can say the same thing.

Mt. Eden in Auckland:
mteden.jpg

And this place (an old scan from a slide) is a harvested sunflower field located approximately 17 km from the town of Ronda, southern Spain. At 36.878° north latitude, 5.236° west longtitude, this field is the antipode to Mt. Eden, Auckland New Zealand (at 36.878° south latitude, 174.764° east longtitude.):
ronda02.jpg

Another NZ walk we took was at the entrance to Aranui Cave near the village of Waitomo Caves. There is a short trail there amongst tree ferns winding up through a narrow canyon with small caves, streams and waterfalls. We did this at night so we could see the glowworms lining the cliffs. Spooky at night, I went back to see it during the day too.
cave.jpg

Next walk (don't let the yellow arrow in the picture fool you) was on a tour to Mt. Tarawera, a volcano that erupted in the 1880s. The tour included a two hour hike to the top and then down into its crater and back up. On Maori owned land, you need to do this as part of a tour.
arrow.jpg
tarawera.jpg

The NZ Department of Conservation has 9 trails officially designated as Great Walks. If you want to walk the full length of these during the warmer months you need to make reservations. We didn't need any though for a couple hour walk along the Tongariro Northern Circuit Great Walk in Tongariro National Park.
volcanoes.jpg
waterfall.jpg

The greatest of the Great Walks of our trip, the Milford Track, has been billed for a century as "the finest walk in the world." This walk was a four day trek and we did the whole thing and, amazingly enough, without being rained on. There is just too much to say about this trip for this post. See the Great Walks link below.
valley.jpg
pass.jpg

Note the posts with the yellow arrows in this picture. They are there because when the valley is flooded up to your thighs you wouldn't find the trail without them:

I was only allowed 10 pictures in the last post so I'm continuing with this one. I edit my pictures to get a good compromise between picture size and file size so I don't fill up Ivar's computer.

The morning of our last day in NZ we managed to walk a short section of another Great Walk, the Abel Tasman Coast Track.
tasman.jpg

A few other walks we managed to do in NZ included an afternoon walking around Auckland's Botanical Garden (a very impressive park,)
botanical.jpg

one along sea cliffs past a seal colony to a lighthouse,
sea-cliffs.jpg

one to see Franz Josef Glacier
glacier.jpg

and a long walk along a beach where we met only a half dozen people.

Another NZ walk we took was at the entrance to Aranui Cave near the village of Waitomo Caves. There is a short trail there amongst tree ferns winding up through a narrow canyon with small caves, streams and waterfalls. We did this at night so we could see the glowworms lining the cliffs. Spooky at night, I went back to see it during the day too.

Next walk (don't let the yellow arrow in the picture fool you) was on a tour to Mt. Tarawera, a volcano that erupted in the 1880s. The tour included a two hour hike to the top and then down into its crater and back up. On Maori owned land, you need to do this as part of a tour.

The NZ Department of Conservation has 9 trails officially designated as Great Walks. If you want to walk the full length of these during the warmer months you need to make reservations. We didn't need any though for a couple hour walk along the Tongariro Northern Circuit Great Walk in Tongariro National Park.

The greatest of the Great Walks of our trip, the Milford Track, has been billed for a century as "the finest walk in the world." This walk was a four day trek and we did the whole thing and, amazingly enough, without being rained on. There is just too much to say about this trip for this post. See the Great Walks link below.

Note the posts with the yellow arrows in this picture. They are there because when the valley is flooded up to your thighs you wouldn't find the trail without them:

A new walk for my wish list!
We were lucky times four. We had already booked our NZ tickets. The Great Walks weren't taking reservations then. At one point I logged in to see when they would open up and they had opened only 40 minutes earlier. When trying to book I saw days already filling up (the Milford Track only allows 40 independent hikers a day and 50 arranged through a tour outfit.) The Department of Conservation closed the track to everybody the day before our hike was to start because of snow. Those hikers couldn't go at all but got refunds. DOC opened the track again for our day. We had four days without rain in one of the wettest spots on earth (a ranger mentioned a 24 hour period he was in that had 620 mm of rain, 2 feet!) The melting snow still gave us plenty of waterfalls to view and some avalanches too.

The Milford Track has the most restrictions and is the hardest track to book but they have 8 other hikes in the Great Walks category and many, many others that are great walks but without the official DOC blessing and the capital letters.

I don't think it is possible to spend too much time in New Zealand (unless your visa says you have to leave. :()

Please stop, Rick, you're making me homesick.
(But actually, it's a small overly green slightly backward part of the world with too many sheep, too much mud, nasty volcanoes (not to mention wobbly land), and a condescending attitude towards the neighbors. Why go anyway?? You've seen one tree/beach/mountain, you've seen 'em all. ;))

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

Minus five Celsius. Cold and very foggy. Ideal weather to test the different layers of clothing.
Meanwhile OH was cooking up tapas for our Spanish themed dinner...:)

I already posted pics of the see through church but this artwork keeps attracting me.
No tourists around...only me and silence.

A selection of Camino Jewellery
Our final walk for 2016 on a very frosty morning (Friday 30th). Not as cold as others mention but still frost out of the sun at 11.00am. Up the hill and along the road at the top before turning back downhill through the woods. At the top we met up with neighbours and a friend of theirs, who is planning to walk the Camino next year :).
Views - looking up the hill, the sun was just coming over the top; looking back from part way up and finally from the top looking across the valley.
Happy New Year to you all
