Hello, I am starting the Camino Portugues on the 5th of September. The guidebook suggests two options for the first day on the Camino Portugues. One to do a detour to Alverca and the other to continue to Vila Franca de Xira, which is slightly further. Any recommendations for which is a better option? Thank you.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Hi, LisaM,

Actually there is a MUCH better third option -- the new (as of May 2016) albergue in Alpriate, about 20 km from the cathedral. There is information on this post:

The Albergue also has a Facebook page. It was built and is run by the volunteers of the Lisbon Camino Association, the Via Lusitana. I was there in May a few days before it opened and it's very nice. Full kitchen if you want to cook, but there is a little bar in town that serves good, cheap home cooked meals. Bom Caminho! Laurie

Thank you Laurie! That sounds like a much better option. By the way, how many days did it take you to complete this Camino? John Brierley's book suggests 23 days. When I walked the French Way I had loads of time and it didn't matter when I finished the Camino but unfortunately I don't have that flexibility this time and it would be helpful to have an estimate of how long is a reasonable time to take. Thank you. Lisa

Lisa, have you looked at the online forum guides in the Resources section? They give good estimates -- 13-14 days Lisbon to Porto and 10-11 days for Porto to Santiago. https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/resources/categories/camino-portugues.40/
