Camino Frances/Salvador/Primitivo (2018)
I am currently on the CF & walking into Leon in an hour but can’t remember where I was to go in Leon to get updated/current info (guides, accommodations, weather & if necessary new pilgrims passports) to start my Salvador/Primitivo Caminos. Any & all help is appreciated!!

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
Go to albergue St Maria (convent). It is the main pilgrim albergue anyway. They have info there on the Salvador and that is where you collect the unique credential for the Salvador.

You are gonna love it!

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Please note that lots of albergues and accommodation on the Primitivo are closing up now; the window for safe travel on the higher elevations is shutting down. You will have to ask consistently about trail conditions and accommodations ahead. THINK TWICE about doing this mountain route now, especially if you are not an experienced high-altitude backpacker. The weather is getting quite iffy!

Let me correct myself: meant ‘THANKS to you & a couple of others’ tips/suggestions’ I will be able to include a part of my Camino that was very important to me. Hence my brief road trip to Santo Toribio! Thanks again!!

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

So Live: I am currently on the Camino Salvador, day 4 and everything is open and the weather is brilliantly fine. I spoke with Enders yesterday and the albergues on this Camino generally remain open. Of course one wouldn’t want to do this route in deep snow, unless experienced in that kind of wilderness travel. Right now couldn’t be better. I have done the Primitivo a few years ago in early November , albergues were generally open and the weather was spectacular. But then I am from Alaska, and prefer cooler weather.

OMG!, this post couldn’t be more timely! I woke up in the middle of the night wondering about both Caminos (Salvador & Primitivo) & praying that the possibilities might still be available & reasonable! This gives me greater & continuing hope! My Camino has been AMAZING so far & I’d love to be able to continue!!! THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH! As of now I should start Camino Salvador on Tuesday!

Thank you Davey for the request!!!

Well today was the latest I’ve started out (10-10:30am) but it was a gorgeous day & I made it to La Robla! Planning on Enders’ 5 day itinerary that stops in Benduenos (if I can get in) & it looks like the weather should be warm & beautiful up to the 5th day, where temps are expected to drop drastically & SNOW was mentioned before I left Leon!

One quick question: How can I thwart the swarms of gnats that bombarded me today?! I’m hoping that an earlier start time will help! Otherwise I’m planning on wearing my mesh laundry bag over my head/face as a makeshift ‘mosquito/gnat’ netting!

If you are planning on Benduenos, maybe check to see if Sandra is still there at this time...they will know in previous albergues, particularly Pajares. Buen camino.

I have never had a gnat problem there so I don't know, hopefully they will be a less of a problem the higher you get!

Keep up inquiring about the weather conditions ahead and looking forward to hearing how you get on.

Ultreia Peregrina!

I had a bad gnat problem from Leon to La Robla in September also. You are absolutely correct, an earlier start will help a lot, they seem to become much more active as the temperature rises through mid-day. Buen Camino, you have a wonderful next 4 days!

Really looking forward to this as I plan to take this route in 2021.
