So few people have walked the Via Francigena to Rome, but the word is getting out and numbers are starting to increase. You can get in before the crowds. We were addicted to pilgrimage after walking to Santiago and after reading Sillydoll's blog decided to walk the VF from Besancon in France. Fantastic decision! (We also took side trips to Florence, Venice and Ravenna along the way.) Because there are so few pilgrims, the Via is very different from the pilgrimage to Santiago: no-one else on the path, hardly any infrastructure - you feel like a pioneer. It is an amazing journey; you walk in fabulous scenery, see great art and architecture, eat Italian food. What's not to like?
