    Booking rooms in advance

I always booked hotel rooms in advance because the accommodations do fill up fast during the active hiking months. It takes the uncertainty out of the adventure but at my advanced age I did not want to have to walk to the next village or to the next hoping to find a bed. I book my flight and...

    Jesus and the Money Lenders

The Spanish economy is in serious trouble. I am in favor of the people working to earn money from the tourist trade in order to support themselves and to pay for maintenance of the trails which take a terrible beating from the peregrinos. Be generous to local people while you are a guest in...

    Stress with finding accommodation

I plan ahead using Booking.com so that I know where I’ll be staying every night. If I get tired before reaching my destination, I catch a cab. No muss. No fuss.

Walking a Camino is a Very Selfish Act - Isn't it?

Time for the SELF is not a bad thing. Remember that you cannot take care of others until you take care of yourself first. Even airline strwards tell us to put on our own oxygen mask FIRST before helping another! So go for it and stop feeling guilty for taking care of yourself.

    What would you do?

No contest: definitely Queenstown NZ. And while on the South Island, make a side trip to Milford Sound, the Eighth Wonder of the Natural World!

    Baggage transfer

CaminoFacil has transferred my baggage on my last three caminos without once screwing up. I heartily recommend them.

    Reading while on the Camino

Yes! My iPad (ereader) goes everywhere with me. I didn’t get a lot of reading done but it was a comfort having it with me. I had my luggage forwarded by Camino Facil so the extra weight was of no concern in my day pack.

An hour to kill in Bayonne

It’s a small station with a waiting room so you won’t be cold. Just relax and read your book!

Drink tap water between Burgos and Leon?

In April I became very sick from eating or drinking something in Carrion de los Condes. I also ended up in a clinic with an IV drip. I recovered after 2-3 days of resting.

    Pacer poles

You can always buy the rubber tips in order to get rid of that annoying tapping.

    Luggage transport

Ditto for CaminoFacil. I have used them on my previous three Camino hikes and there has never been even one little glitch with their service. Highly recommended.

Thanks to those that don't walk and stay home

Yes, indeed. My husband hates hiking, so he stays home and feeds the cats.

Food Poisoning in Carrion de los Condes.

Just curious: how did you arrive at this almost definite conclusion: “it is almost definitely not ... raw milk”.

Food Poisoning in Carrion de los Condes.

I love that town too. It’s so beautiful. Although I have been to Spain six times I have never had any trouble with food until now. Part of the problem may be my advanced age (73). I just may not be up to the wear and tear of hiking every single day for hours in all kinds of weather. But until...

Food Poisoning in Carrion de los Condes.

I have never been lactose intolerant, but the doctor in the clinic was talking about that incessantly. I did not follow the discussion very well in my near-death state and my intermediate level Spanish. That’s another matter: try to lean some Spanish before heading to Spain. When people day...

Food Poisoning in Carrion de los Condes.

I agree. I always pay for bottled water in Spain. My friend Luis from Madrid does not recommend that foreigners drink their water even though it’s processed. It is impossible to know exactly which food was contaminated but when I did a mental inventory of everything that I ate for breakfast...

Food Poisoning in Carrion de los Condes.

It was hot enough for good cafe con leche caliente but it did not burn the lips.

Food Poisoning in Carrion de los Condes.

Unpasteurized milk is creamier in appearance and taste plus it has a distinctively EARTHY (cow) smell which I find slightly revolting. I have never been sick from drinking it before, but all of my alarms will go off in the future at that aroma.
