    Transfer from Santiago to Porto

Just wondering how you found that out........

    Camino Le Puy

It took me 5 years from Le Puy to SJpdlp, at 150 km at a time, but I loved every minute of it. I never intended to go to Santiago but when I got to the Pyrenees I thought I might as well cross over them and see what was on the other side. The first time I did that it was raining heavily with low...

Finished my first ever Camino - Sept 2024

Thank you. I really enjoyed reading your account of your Camino.

Why do pilgrims fly to Pamplona.

I think that strictly speaking it's the way of the Franks, as France as we now know it did not exist until sometime after the camino began. What we now call France was then known as West Francia and was inhabited by people known as the Franks, originally a Germanic tribe who expanded south and...

LIVE from the Camino A Swan Song?

Blimey! At that price I'd expect dinner, a good breakfast and a massage as well. But I did last walk the Invierno.

LIVE from the Camino Currently on the Camino Inglés

Thanks - hadn't spotted that one!

LIVE from the Camino Currently on the Camino Inglés

I see you're based in the UK. Which route did you fly to A Coruna? (Planning to do this camino next year.)

LIVE from the Camino Descent to Roncesvalles

This satellite shot from Google may help. The camino comes in from the north to Alto de Lepoeder, from where the track descends to Roncesvalles. Instead, I turn right and take the asphalt road, the NA2033 downhill to the Iglesia de San Salvador de Ibañeta, from where there is a well-marked and...

    Getting from Sahagun to Ourense

I have used that train twice, latterly from Ponferrada earlier this year. It comes all the way from Barcelona, so by the time it gets to Ponferrada it is ALWAYS an hour late! Yes, it follows the Invierno, more or less, to Monforte de Lemos (currently a bus service from there to Ourense) There...

I wonder what the Gallegos call us pilgrims?

And Sicilians are the worst drivers in Italy. Talk about taking your life in your hands......

Is a pack liner a good idea or nah?

A matter of opinion, surely? The problem is that we are comparing apples and pears. Trash compactors are simply not a thing in the UK (we obviously prefer our rubbish uncompacted) so I have never seen a trash compactor bag and they're not commonly available here. And I dare say you've never...

Is a pack liner a good idea or nah?

I think the UK equivalent to trash compactor bag is the rubble sack, a heavy duty plastic bag used by builders for .... rubble, eg, bricks, plaster, tiles etc. Very cheap from B&Q and similar outlets. I've used one inside a rucksack in the north of Scotland in torrential rain and everything...

    Starting Point: Lourdes vs Aire-sur-l'Adour

Haven't walked from Lourdes, but have visited. Really disliked it. People, presumably very ill, being pushed through the streets on gurneys, to a Disneyfied "grotto" which they will leave in exactly the same condition. Plastic Madonnas everywhere. Aire sur l'Adour is an unremarkable French...

End section in Lectoure or Condom to travel back to UK

Lucky you! Wish I could join you.

End section in Lectoure or Condom to travel back to UK

In Condom, I can recommend Les Angelots chambres d'hotes or, if you're feeling flush, the hotel Continental just across the river. Incidentally, the French are totally mystified by our Anglophone sniggering at the name of this charming little town! It has no connection with latex products.

End section in Lectoure or Condom to travel back to UK

Worth a stay. Rooms so-so, but restaurant wonderful.

End section in Lectoure or Condom to travel back to UK

Condom (nice place to spend the night, as is Lectoure) has four buses a day to Agen, (52 mins) from which there are frequent trains to Paris Montparnasse (3h 40) some direct, some changing in Bordeaux. Lectoure is largely served by bus these days, also to Agen.

    Tipping?

That was a strange experience in the US. I think everywhere in Europe insists that shops, restaurants etc show the total price, including any local taxes.

    Tipping?

Good grief! A lot of chain restaurants in the UK add 10 - 12.5% to the bill as an "optional service charge" but 20% would provoke a riot. Well, in the UK, more like an eye roll and a muttered "tut."

    Renfe - help with translation

Soon after leaving Ourense, look to the left for a spectacular view of the Rio Minho above the hydro-electric dam at Velle.
