    Happy Birthday Camino Forum

I am so indebted to Ivar. This forum meant so much to me as I prepared for my first Camino in 2010. Every day after work I'd log on and spend hours on the site. Meeting Sylvia (Silly Doll) through the Forum was an enormous blessing. She is so dedicated to helping each person she encounters...

Sticks or no sticks, that is the question

As you can see, the opinions on this question are all over the place. I think your age, weight and fitness level are all important variables. I'd say that if you are 45 or older and carrying some extra weight, then definitely take poles to take pressure off of your knees on descents. There...

Looking forward to being a touro-grino!!!

I'm pleased to say that I'll be with Sil on this trip. Cucumber sandwiches with pinkies extended? Hmmm, that isn't what I had in mind, but am open to it, just for fun. Don't drink Coca Cola, however. I'm open. We're going to have a fine time!!

How do Internet Technologies impact the Camino Experience?

Nancy, Last year before I embarked on my first walk on parts of the Camino Frances and parts of the Via de la Plata, I basically lived on this forum. The veteran posters had a tremendous influence, and so did great topics like: What were you most glad that you had with you? I studied foot...

Days 1-3: Camino Frances; Days 4-8 the last 100 km of the Vd

Hi All, I'm so glad that I finished my Camino on the Via de la Plata. I walked alone most of the time. The small albergues were full, but not overfull. There was not a race for the beds. May is a great month to do the Camino in - spring is busting out all over. Folks, doing the Camino...

LIVE from the Camino Just finished three days on the Camino Frances from Roncesva

Hi All, The weather is beautiful and hot. I haven´t been staying at albergues, but I met a Spaniard who was ending his camino because the ¨race for beds¨ was so distasteful for him. He said the albergues were full by about 4 PM. But this is second-hand information. I´ve blogged about my...

LIVE from the Camino Starting in Roncesvalles

Hi All, It´´s a gorgeous day here. There were over 100 people at the Pilgrim´s Mass. I´´ll be blogging at http://www.janetscamino2010.blogspot.com. Hope I got that right. The punctuation of the link might be wrong. Janet

Trying to be Techno-lite, but my plan is falling apart

I have read "A Techno Geek's Guide to the Camino," and the range of views on what to bring. As with so many aspects of this adventure, we each have to find our own way. I have been working on that. A couple of months ago, I decided my computer (2.5 lbs) was too heavy to bring. I decided on...

    Hiking Shoes, or Hiking Boots?

I forgot one thing: for my second pair of footware: very light Croc hiking sandles. These are good for the shower, or if need be they can be used on the Camino. Janet

    Hiking Shoes, or Hiking Boots?

Hi All, I realize it's best to post on this topic AFTER your Camino. I leave for my first in one week. However, I have been basically living on the Forum for 2+ months, and have learned something new every day. I'm on footware # 3. First, was a great pair of boots (too heavy in my...

    hello from the camino

Thank you so much for your post. I leave in 10 days for Spain, and start walking from Roncesvalles two weeks from today. As a result of hearing how cold it is, I've decided to take my down vest after all. I had thought it was silly to take something like that to Spain in the summer. How...

    Photos Diario de Navarra

Wait a minute. It's May 4 (now May 5th in Spain) and it's snowing?! Am I misunderstanding something? I can't believe this. Please clarify where and when these photos were taken. Janet

    The stamps on your credential

I found a fabulous site that is great for those of us who love graphic design and want to choose our stamps and consequently different places to explore. Because of this site I will be going to the cathedral in Ourense to get my credential stamped. http://www.lossellosdelcamino.com Janet

Ash cloud delays and closed airports and cancelled flights

Re: closed airports and cancelled flights I cannot thank Anniethenurse enough for her detailed post, especially the history of the Icelandic volcano erupting for THREE years in the 1820s. This led me to get on the phone with Delta Airlines and change my flight from Portland, Oregon -...

    Deodorant

Okay, folks: Am I going to be able to stand myself? No one ever has deodorant on their packing lists. And because I'm so conscious of keeping my pack less than 17 lbs (7.73 kilos) I haven't included deodorant. What do others think about body odor? My hiking mentor says she washes with Dial...

    4th International Compostela Colloquium (2010

I couldn't agree more. Sil's knowledge of every aspect of the Camino is encyclopedic. And what a generosity of spirit! We are all blessed by how much she gives of herself to help other pilgrims. I hope you can go to this, Sil.

    recharging portable devices

I have looked in vain online for double adapters which allow you to plug in a couple to things into one outlet. Since I'm an American, I'm looking for the US-European version. Since sockets are at a preium, this seems like such a great idea. Does anyone have a link? Janet
