A side-trip to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe
Hey Nuala! Thanks for sharing. I plan to walk the Camino de Norte in September this year and also plan to take a rest day to visit the San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. I was wondering were you able to accommodate the trip from Gernika-Bermeo-SJ de G-Bilbao in one day? Thank you!- marsvt

I love this option! When I walked the Norte in May 2022, I took an extra day in Bilbao in order to bus up to Bakio to visit San Juan de Gaztelugatxe- ended up as one of the highlights of my whole Camino! This is what I recommend for sure - and the town Luarca and the Rock formations La Catedrales. Walk every ocean cliff optional route, loved the first 1/3 of the Norte sooooo much.- poogeyejr

...of the man. So it won't be relevant to you. From San Sebastian to Guernika... if you can make the detour, I'd recommend visiting Gaztelugatxe! It's a hermitage in a little "island" connected by a stone bridge. It has reopened since late 2022 (had to close due to erosion), dogs are allowed...- LavanyaLea

7 days Irun to Bilbao and Guggenheim, eliminate a stage?
I agree - outside is best - the exhibits were very disappointing. But every time I am in Bilbao - I take the time to get a bus to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. So Spectacular. The Walk and the views. Worth the few hour trip! Kathy- poogeyejr

...a side tour to the Tito Bustillo caves to see the prehistoric cave art. Santillana del Mar has Altamira (prehistoric cave museum)but it's a replica, not the original deal as in Ribadesella. Is San Juan de Gatzelugatxe worth visiting on the Camino Norte
...high tourism times - summer, Easter etc. I believe it's still free though. I think if not travelling with Fuji (my dog), a bus would've been so much better. Just checked the invoice for my tolls... that stretch of motorway between San Sebastian and Bilbao was the most expensive! For a 1.5h drive, cost me €12.35! So €24.70 for return!
