Is it necessary to make a reservation in St Jean?

How far or short in advance can one make a reservation? Not knowing how far I can walk in a day it seems like it would be hard to know where to book a room unless you can do it in the morning of the same day.

Another newbie packing list… Comments please.

I bought A Village to Village Guide to Hiking the Camino de Santiago by Anna Dintaman and David Landis. It was recommended to me by a fellow pilgrim.

    Lost Baggage

I wonder how many pilgrims have had problems with lost baggage. I too am debating whether to check my backpack with my treking poles or to carry it on and buy poles when I get there. Flip a coin?
