Book beds until Pamplona if you can and are happy with the distances involved. Start walking when you want ( I also walk early ) you won't always get a lay in with Albergue noise.
You can't help but meet fellow pilgrims, many of whom will be a bit nervous and first timers

I like doing the Calzadilla route, might not be much to see or do, but there are definitely less people about so that may be a plus to some of us

Groups form everywhere there are people on their own. I'd go a bit further to say that it's more likely to happen if people do have a shared goal and are nervous of their surroundings or far outside their comfort zone
Yep , train with the pack you will be wearing IMHO. I could put mine on now after nearly 18months of not having it on and feel the bite where the straps dig in :)
Get used to wearing the shoes, your pack with some decent weight and a few hills ( and ear plugs ) :P

My standard advice for any first timer is to book Roncesvalles ( 1st night for most ) and either Zubiri or Larosoanna for the second night.
After that you should find yourself learning as you go... how far you want to walk per day... where you might end up .. will you need to reserve ??

I was doing my math at the start of the thread and came to the sums of 35 a day for 2-3 months on the Frances ( from my experience) would be minimum 60 days to 90 days @ 35€ = 2100-3100 ish
Knowing that outside the CF route or Spain, those numbers could climb sharply
