Elevation Gain: How Challenging are the Hills on the Central Portuguese Camino?

It’s about half or maybe even less of a challenge…unless it’s raining…a lot.

Elevation Gain: How Challenging are the Hills on the Central Portuguese Camino?

If you want to really hate your life consider this Camino from Cape Town, South Africa to Russia. According to brilliantmaps, the journey would take 4,492 hours to walk, meaning 187 days. However, this is assuming you were walking non-stop. If we assumed a walking pace of 8-hours per day (no...

Elevation Gain: How Challenging are the Hills on the Central Portuguese Camino?

The wonderful reward for conquering the Labruja 450M “mountain” was a misting rain and about ten miles of a walk through Heaven. An old Roman rock road with deep green ferns to about three feet, then the yellow Pussywillows blooming in May-thick and intense for about six more feet up to the...

    Porto to Santiago

I know this was not on your list of questions, but a suggestion from a 75 year old that walked the Portuguese Central last May. Allow a couple of days to enjoy Porto and Tui. We found those two treasures to be most enchanting; full of history and architecture, making it well worth the time. Bon...

My Experience with Hoka Challenger ATR 7s: A Camino Report

On my Camino I made sure to obtain my Hoka ATRs one size up. With the Darn Tough full cushion socks I wanted to make sure there was enough room for the late morning/afternoon foot swelling. It worked like a charm. Also, I used after market insoles from REI.

Congratulations Ivar. My last visit I had just missed you. When are you “usually” in the office now?

    Meal times and pilgrim menus

We did the CP last May, and found Portugal to be as relatively later for lunch and supper than we (USA) were used to dining. However, for an earlier supper we found some of the cafes and bars had a sufficient menu to meet our needs. We also found Pilgrim meals offered at most albergues and...

    Ryanair, applause

Yes! We could go and wish our loved ones a safe travel, and watch them go into the aircraft. Now, unless it’s a military person leaving they will let the family go with them to the gate…unless the security (TSA) trumps the pass and refuses to allow it.

My Experience with Hoka Challenger ATR 7s: A Camino Report

Those Hoka ATRs definitely stand out. They take a licking and keep on trekking for sure. This old man highly recommends them.

Send your picture to the company’s Customer Service link. They will notify her. That’s how I was able to contact our Maria.

Looking for a great tour guide

This was our guide, the one with the microphone, named “Maria” that took us through the Portal of Glory and the Cathedral on 20 May this year. I don’t think it’s the same person. Our’s was a delight.

    Santiago traditions?

Kneeling and praying at the Holy Door was special. No one prevented me nor interrupted me. Several followed my example. It was a blessing.

Camino from Porto - Trekking Poles confiscated at airport!

What about that 435M “hill” just outside of Lebruja? Especially during a rain it was most challenging. The poles were life savers.

    Starting point for central

A few people we travelled with were short on time so they started from Ponte de Lima and were most pleased with the time it took them to get to Santiago. They were done in ten days with a leisurely pace.

    trains in Portugal

We just left Porto yesterday and there was no issue with the public transportation, to include trains.

Which route to choose in terms of asphalt/roads?

This is an example of three out of the five different “pavings” you will run into on the CP…big rocks, sett stones, asphalt, concrete, dirt. I would recommend leaving the Cathedral in Porto by going down the stairs by the old jail and head to the river. Walk the coastal route from there until...
