Update: Via de la Plata Guidebook (English)

I found caminoguide.net really useful as you can print it out and/or view it on your iphone. It's lightweight if you print it yourself and you can discard the pages as you go. Their website is here: http://www.viadelaplataguide.net Andrew.

    Guide for VDLP

You could also try http://www.viadelaplataguide.net which is an excellent and free guide which you can download as a PDF and print on A4. It is updated frequently throughout the year so is likely to be more up to date than a book. Andrew.

flooding at arroyo de los Molinos north of Santiponce

Hi Alan, sorry to hear about the river crossing. I crossed it back in the Spring and it was low, stagnant and stinking! I love the Via de la Plata at this time of year and hope that the weather is kind to you. Keep us up to date with your news. Andrew.

    The Coolest Secret Item

I have a few items that spring to mind: Mini trekking poles that are nearly half the size, when packed, of standard poles and can be stored out of sight in your pack when alburgue rules say leave them outside. A travel toothbrush with a refillable tube of toothpaste hidden in the handle. As...

Christmas in Spain, slightly off topic

Having done several Caminos, this Christmas/New Year my wife and are planning to stay in a small Pueblo blanco called Comares, which is a mountain village 1 hours drive North East of Malaga. The main attraction is the mountain and hill walking which looks amazing. Anyway, my question is we...

    Weather on Camino Finisterre

Paul, If you look at my wife's live blog you'll get a good idea - http://www.scottishfootsteps.blogspot.com From what she's said it's been warm/hot, sunny and cloudy with a little drizzle here and there. Today she's walking from Muxia to Finisterra where she finishes her Via de la Plata, and...

Fun with the Santiago Cathedral webcam

I've just been talking to my wife who's been walking some of the Via de la Plata and is currently in Santiago on her way to Finisterra. I arranged to phone her at 7pm and she said she'd be the main square, Praza do Obradoiro, and hopefully I'd be able to see her on the webcam. The plan worked...

Compostela, cammino di morte (Camino of Death)

My wife is in Santiago and mentioned in her blog yesterday http://www.scottishfootsteps.blogspot.com that an Italian pilgrim was killed in a hit and run this week. I've not heard anything about it.

    Very hot on the Caminos

Thanks Sillydoll. I think Alipilgrim has commented the same on Rachels blog. I'm feeling guilty as I'm pretty sure it was me that suggested she might not need gloves or a thick buff (she does have one of Beverley's Camino buffs though).

    Very hot on the Caminos

My wife posted on her blog about an hour ago that it's 36 Celcius at Lubian which is on the Via de la Plata/Sanabres route. The forecast is for it to get hotter by Friday and then some cooler air coming in. Thankfully she has a wide brimmed straw hat which, she says, is making a huge difference...

    Uh-oh. I'm in trouble aren't I? LHR to STN

I agree with Pieces, across town by train will be more reliable. Monday morning after the holiday on the M25 could be bad, though it may not be. Personally I'd consider booking the Tuesday flight while it is £69 which it probably won't be if you have to book it on Monday. Good luck. Andrew.

    Weird weather in Europe

I got home to the UK from the Via de la Plata a month ago to be greeted by the wettest April on record after one of the driest Winters on record. Whilst in Spain the temperatures varied from (max) 12 C to 28 C but now I can't quite believe what I'm seeing. The temps in Sevilla are around the...

Cost of taxi from Biarritz airport to St Jean

Hi, I took a taxi from outside Biarritz airport to St. Jean last October and it cost 80 Euros. I found out that this is the standard fare. Andrew.

    Weather info

Weatheronline shows weather history quite clearly. You can chose graphs for temps, rainfall etc. Here's the link for Pamplona: http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/weather/ ... NOREGION=1 Andrew.

focussing on light gear reduced my packweight from 11kg to 5

I have been meaning to compile a gear list ever since returning from the Camino Frances last November. On a previous Camino I had suffered from foot problems due to my backpack being too heavy and I realised that the only way I could significantly reduce my pack weight was to really apply...

    Extremadura Albergues definitely open

Thanks viajero. This is great news and reassuring to get it first hand. Thanks also for the heads up on the albergue in Monesterio. I'll be there in 4 weeks so I won't have to think about booking hotels. I hope the good weather stays with you but, lke you say, not so good for the farmers. Andrew.

Which route is warmest in April

The Via de la Plata is one of the warmest which is why I keep returning to that part of Spain. The temperature in Sevilla today is 21C (70F) and quite sunny. I'll be there in 4 weeks and am looking forward to the first warm weather since last October when we had a mini heatwave here in the UK...

My knowledge of Spanish is limited to getting directions, food/drink and accommodation so thanks for this.

Where to start organising my Credecial?

Ian, I ordered Credentials for my wife and I last weekend, via this site, and received them today - many thanks. One question - on the inside cover, where you fill in your information, it says Fecha (date) then 'A favor de' and 'DNI' what do these mean? Andrew.

    Osprey Backpack

I highly recommend the Osprey Sirrus. I've recently bought the mens version (Stratos 36l) and I'm really pleased with it. I've also got a Talon 44 and 22 but I wouldn't recommend these. In Osprey's attempt to make them lightweight some of the materials don't seem to be strong enough. The stretch...
