Smart Packing and Unexpected Backpack Items

Re the SheeWee and similar items ... I got one of another brand which supposedly allowed you to pee standing up and dried off with just a shake. Well .... let's just say I'm glad I tried it out at home before taking it on the Camino. I found that in order to keep from getting pee on myself and...

    Off the Way

My current plan (I should call it the Lemonade Tour) is go to Viana do Castelo tomorrow and spend a few nights there with a day trip to Ponte de Lima. Then to Valença for a few nights, with either a day trip or a night in Vigo. Then a train to Guimaraes for two or thee nights with a day trip to...

    Off the Way

Soliwo, the train trip sounds like an excellent idea! I'll have to see if I can work it in. I may be taking a train to Madrid anyway as my flight out is on a Friday, and the OPO-MAD leg is run by Iberia. I guess their Friday/Monday strike is still on as I haven't heard anything to the contrary.

    Off the Way

I went to Braga today and yes, Bom Jesus is beautiful and a worthy pilgrimage site. I was very moved. And things work out - I wouldn't have seen it if I were on the Camino!

    Walking out of Porto

A few thoughts on walking out of Porto... Yes it's all pavement and does go through suburbs and light industrial areas. I found it interesting, although if I'd known it was to be my only stage I would have taken the metro to Maia and walked from there. The road crossing from Hell as...

How to return from Tui or Vigo to Porto

I have found that the turismo offices in Portugal are the best sources of information on how to get from point A to point B. They have all of the bus and train schedules from their location, and can steer you to one over the other depending on which is the more efficient way to your...

To crackmrmac (Brian) - thanks for the PM. I tried to reply but got a software error (reported to Ivar). I really appreciated your kind words. Cynthia

    Off the Way

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to Braga today; I'd heard that Guimaraes was interesting but didn't know about the archaeological site ... Maybe a couple of nights in Guimares is in order.

    Off the Way

Well, that was quick. After getting one sello in my credential, it appears that I'm done. :-(. I left Porto in mist and light rain Tuesday, in good spirits despite the weather as it was forecast to clear up in a couple of days (and it has). My pack was 2 lbs too heavy due to some consumables...

Checking baggage or bringing it through security?

I think it depends on how far you're going. If you have a short, non-stop flight, then definitely carry it on rather than worry about it getting lost. I've got a long flight coming up with two plane changes, though, and I'm going to put my pack and a couple of pieces of "city" clothes in a...

    Porto Hotels

Among the posts that got lost when the forum was updated was one from Michael (?) recommending the Hotel Trinidade (thanks!), and my response, which I'm reconstructing now :D . Thanks to Jeff for the suggeston of the airport for luggage storage, too. I sent out some emails and had three...

    Packing Medicine

Has anyone been asked for the copy of the doctor's prescription? I never actually see those any more - the doctor always just calls the pharmacy. I do need to take one prescription with me but am hoping that the prescription label and the original packaging will suffice.

    Porto Hotels

I will be walking the Camino Portugues in May 2012, and my plan is to stay in Porto for two nights when I arrive in Portugal, and two nights at the end, before my flight home. I am planning to put my pack and Camino gear inside a checked suitcase, and stay at a hotel that will store my suitcase...

Updated!! Albergues in Camino Portuguese, June/09

Beverly, If you have time please do post your list! I have the CSJ guide to the Portugues, and have the Brierley book on order, but more information is always better than less. Also, what time of the year and how long ago did you encounter bedbugs in Rubiaes? My worst fear is not getting...

    Walking out of Porto

June and Chris, Thanks so much for posting that information, and for posting your pictures. I'm determined to walk from the Cathedral but was worried about the part along the roads. Sounds like Brierley's alternative route is the thing to do. I enjoyed seeing the sites along that way in your...

    Camino Portugues in May 2012

Hello everyone! I'm Cynthia, from central Texas. I've been lurking here for a couple of months on and off, and figured it was time to introduce myself. I was thinking about what kind of adventure I could have next (haven't had one for quite a while, actually), and I happened to remember...
