    Angels

Two weeks before walking I stepped barefoot on a hot coal during a cookout in my backyard. I burned the ball of my foot and a couple of my toes pretty good. You could say that the walking hurt a bit. My wife and I starting in Leon but had to skip from Astorga to Sarria to due illness (hers)...

Memphis in May celebrates Spain, Pilgrimage Art Exhibition

I apologize for not posting about this sooner. Memphis, TN, USA has a month-long festival that celebrates the culture and history of a chosen country. This year's country is Spain! As part of that celebration, a gallery in downtown Memphis is displaying a exhibit on pilgrimage: Exhibit...

    hair cut in santiago

For thread completeness: I should mention that there is a barbershop on a sidestreet (Rua del Villar??) very near the cathedral in Santiago and that one can get a shave for not much money. As I recall, there was only one barber working there; he did a very good job.

    air mattresses and cook pots!

My wife and I took pads along and never used them. We carried thermarest pads (the shorter models), not that large and not that heavy, but on the road all weight seems multiplied. jbgreer

    your MVP

I bought a very small Swiss army knife in Astorga chiefly to have a pair of scissors handy, which I used to cut bandages. jbgreer

    Introduction

Greetings, Steve. My wife and I intended to walk from Leon to Santiago in May of 2004; injury and sickness prompted us to cut out part of the route (Astorga to Sarria). That said, I'd be delighted to answer any questions I can. Thoughts: - Are you saving some time for Leon or intending to...

    Map of Camino Frances

Re: Camino Map Thanks, all, for the helpful responses. Ivar, what you say is very true, and perhaps the answer I want to hear the most, but my next walk may be a while, and, sadly, I find myself impatient. [ and demonstrating I do need the walk, again. ] Rioja, truly your 'signature'...

    uses for a walking stick

Like you, I found my walking stick on the road, but my reunion with it might take a bit longer. I carried my stick with me to Finisterre, where I cast it into the sea. I had decided that couldn't take it back home - my walking stick was this enormous branch I found by the road, so large that...

    walking sticks

I'll echo a few others and say that finding the right walking stick can be part of the journey, too. I found one fairly early on, but then, days later, happened upon my 'real' stick and realized, at the same time, that I'd actually picked up a good walking stick for my wife. As for a compass...

    Favourite things on the camino

You describe Astorga, which is one of my favorite places - not only for the Cathedral and Bishop's palace you mention, but for the wonderful people there! Also: The sheep playing in the field behind El Labrabor at Ventas de Naron. The mist on the lake at Portomarin. The weddings at the...

    Map of Camino Frances

Greetings. A few years back I saw a map of the Camino Frances route. It was long (2-3m) and narrow (1/2m?). I've inquired as to the dimensions of several popular Camino maps but have yet to find one similar; most are squarish. [ The owner of the original map said he thought he acquired it in...

    Preparations for the camino?

Hear, hear (or perhaps, "don't hear", "don't hear") on the ear plugs. Another small bit of advice: consider shipping things ahead or home if you find that you will no longer need them. My wife and I shipped our heavier clothing ahead after we had finished the significant mountain areas...

    jbgreer introduction

Greetings. My wife Terre and I walked a portion of the Camino Frances in May of 2004. We started in Leon and made our way as far as Astorga. Unfortunately, illness and injury slowed our walk, so we took a train to Sarria and re-started our journey, finishing in Santiago de Compostela. My...
