LIVE from the Camino Camino in April 2012

Have had 5 hot and cloud-free days from SJPP and it was hot and windy but with some cloud cover yesterday. Today though it was 100% cloud cover and constant drizzle from Viana, with it increasing from Navarrete. Temperature was down significantly. I've seen forecasts of snow for Burgos.

    3...2...1...Camino!

3...2...1....Oh er! Leave Ebbsfleet International at an awfully early hour on Tuesday morning, bound for SJPP. Have never done a blog before and don't know how long the attempt will last but will try to post on route at http://sharmuk.wordpress.com if anybody is interested. Cool, calm and...

    Fanny Pack or ???

Thanks very much for that tip. Went to order one and found that they also sell a high-vis rain cover so got that too, the majority I've seen elsewhere were all in dark colours.

    HeadLight

If you have to walk on the road at night and are in a group then the red light worn backwards on the head of tail-end charlie is a handy warning to motorists.

    How big is my bag?

You can get a rough estimate by measuring it and using one of the on-line fish tank volume calculators such as http://www.firsttankguide.net/calculator.php. Clearly the pack is not square sided but you'll at least get a general idea of its volume. More importantly does everything you want to...

    Walking poles or not

I suspect height and body mass has a big effect on how useful poles can be due to the leverage exerted on the joints. I'm tall and reasonably skinny and for the best part of 40 years always used to go up steps two at a time because it was quicker and easier; what seemed a good idea at the time...

    Availability of Gas

in the UK it is illegal to send gas by post: I don't know about France* or Spain but it may well be the same so worth checking before you go. Also if you're sending from France to Spain that'll have international postage implications too. * update - it's illegal there too...

Did movie: "The Way" motivate you...

I'd head about the Camino many years ago and seen pilgrims and way markers while out and about in Europe however I didn't know about the film 'The Way' so it didn't influence me when I made my decision to go. That was down to taking voluntary redundancy which gave me the time and funds. The...

    Water

It's possible that older water sources such as fountains have lead piping making the water officially not fit for human consumption.

    Knife?

It used to be (maybe still is) common practice for coarse fishermen in the U.K.

    Flaming bull

Book 22 of Livy's History of Rome says Hannibal used flaming brands on the horns of oxen to deceive the Romans. http://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/10907/pg10907.txt...

    Kindle the perfect pilgrim gadget?

There's no built-in microphone on the Kindle so I don't think Skype will work. You might be able to blog using the experimental browser but it's likely to be a slow and laborious process that will drain the battery quickly.

    medical insurance

To illustrate how lack of insurance can affect not just yourself but others too have a look at this BBC story http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-kent-14345602 or do a search for "Richard Plummer" and Bali. The poor man's parents have had a hell of a time. Glad to hear, DesertRain, that you've...

    Not timely and with apologies

It's a handy warning for those with cat allergies. Thanks.

The Big thread about Lacing tips for shoes and boots

After doing the bow try passing the free ends of the lace under the tensioned lace between the nearest two hooks or D-rings. I do this with both flat and round laces and the friction is usually enough to stop the bow coming undone.

    Can I avoid top bunk?

I can understand their feelings about the air if not the cold. For me keeping windows closed is the easiest way to limit exposure to pollen at night - I'd love to be able to sleep with open windows as I did before developing hay fever but experience has taught me otherwise. When it is at its...

    Class of 2012

Hello everyone I'm from Kent in the south-east of England and planning to do my first Camino on the Frances starting in the last week of March 2012 from SJPP. Luckily I can be flexible on my start and end dates so that may change as circumstances dictate. Have wanted to do the Camino for many...

The Best Song To represent The Camino

To the tune of the chorus from a certain Monty Python song: Every gramme is hated Every gramme is weight For every gramme that's carried Feet get quite irate I'll get my Altus Poncho and see myself out...

Storing your car while you're on El Camino

Hello If you keep your car outside then a solar charger can be useful to keep the battery topped up and compensate for the draw made by the car alarm. I live in the UK and used one from Maplin...
