Bus Pamplona-SJPP - Vital Camino Tricks

Sept 12th of 2012, the bus from Roncesvalles to St. Jean had stopped for the winter season. They worried about snow blocked passes. No taxi available. So, my Camino started in Roncesvalles. We pushed too hard the first few days out of Roncesvalles. Very challenging initially. Should have...

    Class of 2013

The 2 hour bus ride goes from Pamplona to Roncesvalles. From there the bus will take you over the mountain to St. Jean, but not in the winter season, which begins in mid September. That is to avoid surprise snowfalls in the mountains which may block the passes. Then you might be able to find a...

    bed bugs 2013

I sprayed my pack, sleeping bag, pillow case and PJ's with permethrin before leaving. Had no problems. Saw only one woman who was bitten. Not bad. Malcolm

    Canada's London

I live in Windsor, Ontario. Might make to your April meeting. What other details do I need to know to attend this meeting? When will your Bayfield meeting occur? I camp at the Pinery the third week of July so will be in the area. Walked the first half of the Camino last Sept-Oct. Malcolm

    Flags on backpacks

Wore a Canadian flag on my pack and a small flag pin on my shirt. Got many positive comments, much discussion on my home and native land. Gave away many of the small flag pins. Urged people to visit, to see the Rockies near Vancouver or come to Toronto, hop on a bus for the short trip to Niagara...

Thoughts on photography and camera selection for the Camino

The Canon G12 worked marvelously for me. Excellent results. Used 16 meg cards. Changed them occasionally to preserve older pics in case the camera went missing containing a card with all my pics. Therefore would only loose most recent pics. Always a good idea to replace cards so as to only loose...

Inevitable for feet to stink, or a sign of bad shoes?

Odor comes from bacteria. Use antibacterial spray to kill the odor. No bacteria, no odor.

    Bed bugs alert

I too bought Permethrin spray, mine as an ingredient in a pest management spray from the gardening department of Canadian Tire as one can't buy the stuff itself in Canada. I sprayed the inside and outside of my pack as well as my entire sleeping bag, pillow case and pajama pants and shirt, twice...

    Mid September 2012

I land in Bilbao on Sept 11th. Will have a look at the Guggenheim Museum, designed by Canadian Frank, (this Canadian wishes he had that talent) and bus it to St. Jean. Hope to be there by the 12th or 13th. Will begin the hike the next day. My Forum Patch and my Maple Leaf flag are on my 19 lb pack.

    please don't be put off

I fly out of Detroit on the 10th, land in Paris the 11th and then on to Bilbao to see the Guggenheim. Hope to start from St. Jean by the 14th. This Canadian boy will look for you. Your family group should be easy to spot and well remembered. Family groups are always solid gangs. What day do you...

Being prepared and the importance of testing your gear...

Tube to ship poles and sharps by plane Who has shipped their poles and sharps in a cardboard tube? How successful were you? Did the airline give you a hard time over this method? Did it arrive successfully? I will be traveling from Detroit to Paris and on to Bilboa in Sept. Only a 1 1/2...

Visa check on Ryanair - don't get caught without it

Must Canadians, with Passports, now get visas to land in Paris, or to then walk over the mountain into Spain? As there are no customs agents along the Camino, how might Spain enforce a Visa rule? I don`t recall Canadians requiring Visas to land in France. My dad didn`t need one, landing in...

    Knife?

The ferry option seems reasonable. I plan to fly from Canada to Paris. My planned return takes me from Santiago to Paris. From there, Eurostar to London was my plan. I may be dissuaded if I can't take my knife. The chunnel is so famous but the regulations seem daunting. Maybe it will be a ferry...

    Knife?

While the restriction for travel on the Eurostar are understandable, the answer to how one transports these restricted items still hasn't been explained. How does one get one's restricted items through the chunnel if there is no baggage check and they can't be kept in one's carry on luggage? I...

    Knife?

Very interesting. Thank you, merrellj for posting the relevant regulations, but I still wonder, how will the train officials know that you have a knife if you don't declare it?. Do they do a baggage inspection as in pre boarding an airplane flight?. Of course many people carry modest, 3" pocket...

    Knife?

At what level is passenger screening on the Eurostar? Is this at the Airport level with pat downs and body scans, or is it more cursory? How would they know that a passenger has a knife buried in his back pack. Do they assume that all pilgrims carry an knife? How do they screen? That question...

    Knife?

In the most recent Pilgrim notes from the CSJ, they state that the Eurostar train system does not permit knives to be carried on board it's trains. This seems absurd. I have carried a modest Swiss Army pocket knife all my adult knife. How can they control this. Many Many men carry a pen knife...
