Death of a German pilgrim on the Camino Frances

It is very sad indeed. I hope that they had experienced great Camino moments together, they will be key memories to help and support the journey onward in her life.

    Towel - Help!

I used a Lifeventure Trek Towel, xl size. Says it’s “Hydro fibre ultralite” on the cover/carrier. It worked fine for me, I also take it on cycling and motorcycling tours. Packs small, it dries out quickly and is big enough to wrap round. Admittedly not as nice as the conventional towels at...

Daily foot care at day's end

Hi I used to apply Gerlach's GEHWOL EXTRA foot cream every day after I had finished my walk. It became a nice daily routine, finish walk, shower etc and then tend to my feet with the cream, give them a "once over", make sure everything was ok. You can buy the cream from Amazon if like me you...

Hi Paulette (and anyone else stating on the 1st of June) I too am walking from Porto to Santiago starting on the 1st. I shall be walking with a companion who I met on the Frances last year. I hope you enjoy your Camino, even if we don't meet we shall have shared footprints at some time. Enjoy

LIVE from the Camino Is finding accommodation on the Camino Frances, becoming too stressful?

I too am an early riser, did the Frances from Saint Jean in 26 days because this suited my pace and enjoyment of walking, not because I worried about bunk counts!! I was always considerate of others and would pre pack the night before. Remember the Camino is made up of all sorts, as is life...

    Transporting my bike by coach

ALSA only allow 4 bikes at a time on their vehicles, the bags are great but I think they are 10 euros. Front wheel off, luggage separately.

    Alternative itinerary

The 18km was measured from Pamplona by a Canadian with his Garmin.

    Alternative itinerary

I would recommend Albergue San Andres in Zariguieque. Stayed there in May, very clean, 10 euros for B and B, dinner 10 euros more. Beware though it is 18km from Pamplona not the 10km you might have read.

Music makes the world go round...

I used an iPhone to listen to music, no problems, just don't crank up the volume. If you can hear the rest of the world then you will be ok. My experience of bikes was even with or without the music you missed some and 99% of the riders were cool. For me walking is in itself meditation...

    Bed bugs this year???

Just walked in May, didn't get any problems personally but did meet those who had. They were in the minority not majority. Used a silk sleeping bag liner, which was from Lifesystems and came already treated. The liner was good, sometimes a bit too warm, but worked. Don't worry too much about bed...

any advice what sort of footwear - ?hiking boots

Am on the Camino Frances at the moment, weather is very warm and the trails dry and hard under foot. My Meindl boots are a little stiff soled for the conditions and so I am wearing my trainers a lot. If I could change anything, it would be my choice of boot. If you wander the lines of boots...

    Do I go solo?

Hi Leanne I am starting on the 3rd of May from SJPdP, so I don't think we shall meet along the way as you will have started just after me. I wish you all the very best and as you can see from what others have written on here I am sure you will be fine. You will have good and bad days, but hey I...

    Class of 2014

Been on the Bahn website tonight looking at train times for start of May. You know what it is like, I thought I was chilled and being cool about it, taking my time, no rush blah blah blah. Then read everyone else's updates and thought, nah get on it with it. Once I figure out how to work out...

    Coincidene/Serendipity on the Camino?

I am sure that there will be many theories for what you outline, some faith some fate others pure coincidence. For me, key to all, is that you are open to what the Camino presents. We all have our reasons for the journey, I suspect that as with life it is how we make our journey that is as...

    Class of 2014

Hey Mitch The more stones your family give you to carry, the more the scales will show you have lost!! Don't tell everyone, the Camino will be full of people huffing and puffing under the weight of rucksacks filled to the brim. Cruz de Ferro will be higher than Everest :-)
