    Towel - which size?

Yes! Mine (REI medium) bled color until I'd washed it a few times in the machine. Glad it didn't color everyone's wash in a communal load!

Reflections on my equipment list for the Camino Primitivo in June 2015

Hi Liz- Thanks for the gear list! I'm wondering how much emergency food you brought and if you used it. Looking back through my records I brought 4 oz. of emergency food on the Camino Frances (two 1-oz. peanut butter packs, small pack of crackers, one dried soup packet and two instant coffee...

    Trail Running Shoes

My Brooks Adrenaline trail runners lasted from SJPP to Santiago very nicely, and have gone on to have a second life with my sister-in-law (who hikes infrequently and never runs)! I was also very concerned about if they would last and realized that they are designed to last for 300-500 RUNNING...

Post Camino bed bugs in sleeping bag

If you are hesitant to wash your down bag, it can simply be put in a drying machine at its highest setting for an hour--that will kill the eggs and bugs. And it works no matter what the weather conditions are outside. This is what I do when I'm traveling because a wet down bag can take many...

    Insulin

Hi Marilyn, While I don't know the answer to your question, I suggest you search for posts with the keyword "insulin" and by the late member "methodist.pilgrim.98". He shared a lot of info about doing Caminos while using insulin and may have answered your question in a post. There may be some...

Going back to the Chacos/Teva question

My personal opinion update on the Chacos ZVolv: they do not have quite the same arch support. :( The difference seemed very noticeable to me wearing them around the house. They ARE lighter, coming in at 18 oz. (My above figure for my Yampas was wrong--they weigh 22 oz.) Also, the back heel...

Going back to the Chacos/Teva question

I can't find the exact weight listed anywhere either. My Chaco Yampas weighed 19 oz. when new (just looked it up on my original packing list), so these should weigh about 15.2 oz in U.S. women's size 8 if they are indeed 20% lighter. Still FAR heavier than the Keens.

Going back to the Chacos/Teva question

Chacos were my choice for my first Camino; they are my choice for my second Camino. However, I have noticed that this year there is a newer, lighter-weight (by 20%), and softer version called Z/Volv. Decided just last week that although my old ones are still perfectly acceptable, I'm going to...

    Heel Cracks

Add me to the list of people who get cracks in my heels if I don't stay on top of my dry, dry, dry, and callous-y feet. I agree that vaseline is the most effective, longest lasting moisturizer--I keep a little tub next to my bed and manage to remember to rub some on my heels most nights. There...

    Buff on summer camino

I also used my buff to cover my face (bandita style) during one afternoon when gnats would not leave me alone for hours--prevented a lot of unintentional protein intake! I suppose a light-weight scarf would work nearly as well, and might have been a bit cooler, but because a buff is stretchy it...

Safety concern - just stopped my Primitivo

As a woman who hopes to walk the Primitivo by myself in the Fall, I would like to add my thanks to you marc31! Taking the time out of your trip and reliving the experience each time you mention it here or with the police must be difficult; I hope it is also healing. Know that you have done a...

    Hiking umbrellas for sun protection

Just another possible work around. For pilgrims, the umbrella would go under the backpack, obvs!

    2 shoe/sandal related questions

Other than water, my sandals are the densest and heaviest single thing in my pack (they are 1 lb., 5 oz. Chacos, because they help keep my plantar fasciitis at bay when trekking). Therefore, they go pretty high up in my pack, in a plastic bag, but as flat against my back as I can get them. If...

Services in English in the Cathedral of Santiago 2015 - please share with others

Just a suggestion, but maybe the wording of the last line should be changed from "Pilgrims of all faiths and none are very welcome" to "Pilgrims of all faiths, agnostics, and atheists are welcome" to clarify that ALL (not none) are very welcome! ;)

    Bilbao to SJPP

I think flying into Bilbao is a terrific idea! It's a smallish town with enough to see to make it perfect for a day or two to recover from jet lag. The old town is delightful for strolling, the public transportation is terrific and effective, and the museum is world famous, if small.

    Meeting up in Santiago?

I think you misspoke! Don't you mean if someone like peregrina2000 was going to make an appearance? ;) (No disrespect to falcon intended!)

    Meeting up in Santiago?

Laurie- I'm reluctant to go into detail because it was three years ago now and it has most likely changed, but I found the bathrooms to be filthy, even by my been-on-the-road-for-5-weeks standards. However, the staff was warm and welcoming and I did like the location. Maybe someone wasn't...
